Windows Update icon in Notification Area on the Task Bar

I have windows update set to notify me when updates are available. I have CRITICAL UPDATES waiting when I manually check windows update.

 

I have NO windows update icon in the Notification Area on the Task Bar.

 

I have NO alarm in the Action Center in the Notification Area on the Task Bar or when I manually check the Action Center.

 

What wrong and how do I get this to work?
