Microsoft updates can't download on shutdown & also when computer is running (yellow shield)

Hi All :I have Windows XP with automatic updates on. Whenever I shut my computer down, automatic updates tries to install the updates but apparently isn't able to because it tries every day. A second problem is the yellow shield comes up on the tool bar when I'm

on the computer and it looks like the automatic updates are installing but the yellow shield comes back. Evidently, the updates are not installing either way. I don't know how to correct this problem. Can someone help me, please ?Thanks in advance.LisaTimoriah.
