when i go to windows update the program opens and screen is blank.

I have windows 7 on my laptop. When I try to open the windows update program from list of programs or anywhere. I click on it when it open the screen is blank. In order to close the program I have to alt/ctrl/del, and open task manager and close the program

that way. I am unable to check anything or update.
