Guest KTH Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 I am trying to update a laptop with Windows XP Home edition that is approx. 2 years old and has never had any microsoft updates. When I try to get a list of updates I am told that I need Active X. The ActiveX icon does not show up under the address bar. How can I get updates?
Guest Engel Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 Hello KTH, You didn't say, or at least it's not clear, whether you tried getting the updates using Internet Explorer, by going here: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Some new ActiveX software has to be installed on XP before your computer can be scanned. Just follow the prompts to do so, but it should then list and download the same updates, and install them, as those you see in the taskbar notification. If going to the site is successful, keep going back until there are no more critical updates to install. Good luck -- "KTH" wrote: > I am trying to update a laptop with Windows XP Home edition that is approx. 2 > years old and has never had any microsoft updates. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 ALSO, temporarily disable the installed antivirus software just prior to accessing Windows Update. If Spybot is installed, disable TeaTimer, too. After successfully installing the required software components needed to update, suggest you NOT do any further updating, instead, close IE, and then restart the system. If Automatic Updates is disabled, recommend that you reenable it prior to restarting. After restarting, go to Start > Run > type in wuauclt \detectnow Click OK That *should* get the updates downloaded to the system via Automatic Updates. Then install them in batches of 5 or 10. If there is any issue with a problematic update, then you can uninstall those instead of ALL of them at once. Remember to reenable the AV and Spybot afterwards.
