Messages disappearing from Windows Mail inbox

I have the Vista operating system and am using Windows Mail for e-mail. Messages are mysteriously disappearing from my inbox when I am viewing my e-mail inbox. I can move them to the deleted box and they remain and they are ok when I am out of e-mail
