Windows Update taking over 4 1/2 hours

My laptop has been in Windows 8 Update: Installing update 1 of 2.......for the past 4 1/2 hours! not sure what it is updating. is this normal? I've been told never to turn off my computer when Windows is updating- it can cause major problems.
