Vista Update KB938194 fails - how I fixed it

I'm making this post as I have followed several other threads on this

update and associated errors - none of the fixes worked for me.

I'll start by saying my Vista install is stable but I have previously

posted in groups to say it does do some odd things - like contatntly

asking me to authorise the same programs to run, never remembers my

Live Messenger settings and always asks to start Firefox and Outlook

in safe mode as they have not shut down properly - suggestions so far

have been Avast antivirus related - and/or permissions. Anyhooo...

I went to the Miscrosoft Windows Download site - searched 'KB938194',

downloaded it and installed it.

I then rebooted to finish the install

I booted into Safe Mode where it installed then shut down and

restarted - I [F8] again and into Safe Mode

Then restarted back into normal boot - all installed fine.

In my own non-PC-technical mind it's dto do with permissions on files

and related to the problem above - but at least the update is

installed and my install doesn't re-boot every night trying (for weeks

now) to install KB938194

Thanks all
