Can you tell me... why does my Windows 8 do everything I want or need, do it well, quickly and easily? Why does it accept every piece of software or hardware I throw @ it? Does anyone know why my Windows 8 is so stable, smooth, fast and problem free? Thanks to Microsoft, I am being tied down and forced to use this strange new OS. Have visited forums & done much research trying to find out why this OS works so enjoyably well. Please, help. Any ideas? Cheers, Drew Drew MS Partner / MS Beta Tester / Pres. Computer Issues Pres. How do I run Modern (or whatever stupid name you're currently using to describe this epilepsy induing mess of colour and space-wasting boxes) in a Window (you know, those things that Windows takes its name from). I just want to be able to see information from several programs at once, just like I have always been able to and make comparisons etc I used to just put a window in each quarter of the screen and then I could make comparisons or copy and paste to my heart's content, but now I can't figure out how to do this. There must be a way. I refuse to believe anybody at Microsoft could be stupid enough to remove this kind of functionality (unless you don't want about 20%…

How do I create a subfolder on windows 8 start screen, I can't find how to anywhere? Really need this as just keep getting this weird unorganised 'list' of those (presumably designed for 6 yr olds requiring primary colours and shapes to help identify things) square boxes that just go on for ever to the right and left. I have to scroll loads to find the program I want. It would be much easier just to double click into a folder I have created that holds my apps in a usefully organised way (Dev tools, Media tools, MS crapware etc). Double click on subfolder | See icon for app I want | Double click it. | Use program is much preferable to all this scrolling left and right …

While playing a game mid-lunch break, my technet (retail) copy of windows 8 with a purchased media center upgrade key (which was all activated and working properly) suddenly brings up the Activation screen as if it's not activated...? Why did this happen? Office did the same thing when I re-launched it. Office activated with the same key without a problem, however Windows won't activate now. When I try to enter my media center product key or technet product key it fails. It is very uninformative in the error. When I try to purchase a new key it tells me I can't in my country. When I use the slui 3 command and put my product key in that way, it tell…

Ok Running a v6v4tunnel on a Windows 8 Pro Machine via Tunnelbroker.net I can get the tunnel up and running and advertised on the Network ok and all seems ok until I reboot the W8 box After reboot the W8 box still is able to access IPv6 via the tunnel and still advertises itself to the network however Other devices are no longer to access external IPv6 sites Setting up Wireshark on the W8 machine I pinged google from my laptop, the trace shows the ping going out to google and also the reply coming back, however the replies are not forwarded back to the laptop. I can ping the laptop both via link local and the /64 address from the W8 machine. It seems that the r…

In our existing Windows 7 environment, we use Citrix XenApp published applications integrated with our start menu under the XenApp folder. However, my Windows 8 start menu is automatically filled with every published application automatically when I logon. See attached screenshot. I'm in IT so I have access to lots of apps but this would be unworkable for normal users as well. Whilst I can tag them all and remove them, they get added when you logon on again. I assume this is because of the way Citrix Receiver populates the local start menu and my guess is the following is happening. Citrix receiver starts in the background and deletes all of it's shortcuts in the star…

Hi all I have a MacBook Pro running OSX as my primary OS with Windows 8 Pro installed as a VM, However I now want to delete the VM and Install my copy of Windows 8 Pro on a partition to have a dual boot option. Poor performance of the VM is the primary reason for wanting to change to dual boot, so my question is... can I still use my activation key for Windows 8 Pro when I delete the VM and install to a new partition? N.B this would all be happening on the one computer. Kind regards Gary View the full article

In another forum someone asked what people felt about Windows 8. This is what I had to say: Ok, well, to the OP I will offer my comments & promise to not be overly techy. Many folks who have spent a bit of time @ this forum, already, know my feelings but, that's ok... I have been using Windows 8 for about a year. I beta tested it for Microsoft in a dual-boot with Windows 7. I then migrated to the GA & said "bye-bye" to 7. I knew quite a bit of it/about it prior to beginning to, actually, work on or with it. It didn't come as a shock to me, much of it had me keenly interested and I had no prolonged agony learning it…

I have a small remote office (they do not have an onsite IT) that received their first Windows 8 laptop but they can not access the metro apps with their domain account but can access them with a local account they created. The same GPO settings are being applied to other users at other locations and it works for them. I searched the web and found several things for them to try and none of them have worked. Here is what I have tried: 1. Make sure your computer is updated. 2. Make sure UAC is turned on. 3. If you are using skydrive users say you need to have your Microsoft profile filled out completely or apps stop working after installing skydrive. 4. chec…

Here is what I have done: In Win 7, I made an image backup (vhd) using the built-in backup program. I copied this to an external HD. Then, I fired up my WIN 8 Pro laptop. Connected the external HD. Opened Hyper-V and created a new VM by using the "existing VHD" on the external HD which is the WIN 7 image backup. However, I get a "Boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device." message. Am I missing something? EDIT: I dont want to dual boot, I want to be able to open my WIN 7 OS under WIN 8 environment. View the full article

The questions similar are not Windows 8, so Im wondering why the new computer I bought 2 weeks ago, has turned itself off every day, and shows a Windows error on reboot, and ask me to "Send or Not Send" the file so Microsoft may work on it. Can someone look at my dmp files to figure out? I think there may be a problem with an external Hard Drive, so I will unplug that for a few days. Suggestions View the full article

Hi, in my startscreen I have many apps. Now when I start an app at the right of my startscreen I scroll there and start the app. If I now close the app or press the Start button I am back at the startscreen, but not at my previous position. I am at the left side of the startscreen again. Should I not be at the horizontal position I was before? I often want to start an app directly beside or near the app I started before. Thank you. I've been having a problem using the media server capability of Windows Media Player since upgrading to Windows 8. I did not have this problem when this same machine was on Windows 7. When I try to access this computer's (let's call this Comp A for clarity) libraries using ANOTHER machine's WMP, I get the error "The remote media library did not allow the connection. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information." However, I can see Comp A's shared folders and access those files since it shows up under the Homegroup in the file explorer. The strange thing is that Comp A can stream media libraries from the other computers on my network w…

I installed Windows 8 Pro and Windows Media Center on a new Crucial V4 SSD last November and now find the drive has problems with the disk activity stuck at 100%. It looks like the only remedy is to upgrade the firmware from v22 to v25 which Crucial have just released and appears to solve the problem. The problem with this is that it will wipe the SSD, so I will have to reinstall Windows 8 Pro upgrade (After installing Windows7) and then the Windows Media Center which I think is in Added Services. Can anyone confirm this is what I will have to do:- Load Windows 7 using the Product I have for the Package Start the upgrade wizard and go through the upgrade procedure us…

Hi, I currently have Win 7 (32 bit) installed on a desktop. I am planning to install Windows 8 Pro(64 bit) on the same desktop. I'm trying to achieve the below 1. Run Win 7 and Win 8 on demand. When I boot my desktop I can choose which OS I want to use 2. I'd like to install Win 8 on a separate HDD and then in future continue to install any Win 8 software on the other hard disk. 3. I don't want to loose any of my data, files etc. (I've backed them up anyway!!) 4. I currently use dual monitor on Win 7, will I be able to use them with Win 8. Please suggest/advise. Any helps is much appreciated. Thanks. Pranav Regards, Pranav Vaidya View the full article

I had a creeping hard drive crash last week and I noticed that many, many files are broken due to defect sectors. Unfortunately all those corrupt files have been copied in my files history, which is now (partly) corrupted, too. I have a very old backup that could be used to recover only the broken files, because most of the data has been updated meanwhile. Unfortunately it's not only few files I could check by hand. That is why I am looking for a solution that checks if files may possibly be corrupt. I don't know if files on NTFS store a hash within to quickly see if it is corrupt, I seriously hope so. Or maybe there is another possibility? I also noticed that parts of…
