After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, my main monitor has always been detected as the external monitor. I think this is because my computer was connected to an external monitor when I was upgrading. When I right click and try to change the main monitor from Screen Resolution, the check box is gray and does not allow me to click it. When no external monitor is connected, the laptop screen is black. Is there anyway to fix this? View the full article

I usually connect to internet through out VPN connection at the college. Live tiles update when I connect but when I open an app such as Weather or News they say I'm offline. I have no problem when I connect directly to internet such as through sharing my cell phone internet connection. Solutions I tried but were not successful: Uncheck "Use default gateway on remote network" option. (I lost total internet access by doing this.) Start DNS Client service. (It was set to start automatically.) View the full article

I just got my first W8 hybrid in the form of Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro XE700T1C. It's too early but I'm impressed already by the newly revamped OS. Indeed, it started to bring back the WOW in Windows. Nice work, I wish Microsoft continue to listen and innovate. Maybe it's nitpicking but I have this little wishlist. 1.) Option to make the tiles transparent in the Start screen so that they won't block the underlying wallpaper. I love those transparent widgets in my Android handle. 2.) Option to use a different image other than the natively-provided images as the wallpaper on the Start screen. 3.) Negotiate with Swype or Touchpal to bring any of the swiping keyboard ac…

I just got this new laptop, complete with Windows 8. Everything was fine until I realized after updating one night, the next time I used it, I got the BSOD, telling me "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart", then it shows a "system service exception". It wouldn't stop crashing, so I restored my computer to the original state (and started everything from scratch). A few days after that, I shut down & noticed that the computer was updating again, and sure enough, when I turned it back on, I got the BSOD again, and again. I didn't think the UPDATE could be the culprit, but it just cannot be anything else! This is crazy! I p…

hey guys, first time poster here so sorry if I do something incorrectly. Ever since I upgraded from win7 to win8, I have had multiple explorer crashes when browsing my big folders/drives. It is quite annoying as it loses whatever file transfers are in progress. I have done various searches to no avail. I was hoping someone could please analyse the various dump files. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=870F6AE76A12C73C!242&authkey=!AK8ZGdENIwYgajM https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=870F6AE76A12C73C!239&authkey=!ADKwyDo5IxmMTGY https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=870F6AE76A12C73C!240&authkey=!ANdpwD-95aY8A4Q https://skydrive.live.com/red…

Hello, all. Loving Windows 8! I'm finding myself working in the Modern environment much more than I thought I would before I installed it full time after it went RTM. The issue I'm having with Outlook 2010 is this: Unless I'm working in the desktop environment at the time when new email arrives, there is no audible indication that a new email arrives. To sum up: When I'm working in the desktop environment, the email notification sound works fine when new email arrives. When I am in the modern environment working on an app or simply sitting in the Start screen, there is no email notification sound when new email arrives. Regards, Don View the full article

Hi everyone, I'm really stuck here with my HP dv7t-7200 laptop.. I'm running Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) & after a Windows Update reboot, I can't get to the start screen. The spinning balls continue for hours & hours. I know there's a recent restore point that I can restore to, but I'm having trouble accomplishing this.. My laptop has a RAID array, so I need to load the storage driver in order for the Windows Recovery Environment to be able to see the hard drives. I don't see any options for doing this, can someone please help..? Here's where I'm at step-by-step: 1) Boot from Windows 8 DVD 2) Choose "Repair this computer" 3) …

So, what was the point again to remove the DVD codecs? We've been told they are expensive, ok, so, they are gone. What's the result? The Windows 8 retail pricing is back to normal. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/pd/productID.266514600 http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/pd/productID.264832100 199$ for pro, 119 for the home version. W7 had the same pricing in case you forgot: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10272259-56.html "Microsoft sets Windows 7 pricing, upgrade programs" "When boxed copies of Windows 7 go on sale on October 22, Microsoft plans to charge $119 for Home Premium, $199 for Professional" I do…

Even just I double click a text file on the desktop! In this case the Task Manager couldn't be launched so I have no way to browse/kill applications or processes. I think that is due to privilege issue but I have set Never notify for my UAC and I am administrator. Any idea? Thanks in advance! Windows 8 pro x64 (version 6.2.9200) updated to the latest. Hi, <a href= FYI: Some have a tough time w/ change & acting accordingly in a timely manner when change does come. So fair warning... the only date I have been able to find is March 15th for Messenger ending. It is being replaced by Skype. Right now, installing Skype & signing in to it w/ a Microsoft Acc't lets both Messenger Contacts & Skype Contacts be listed. You might consider switching over to Skype before the 11th hour. There is a Skype APP in the MS Store. There is, also, still, Skype for Windows (Desktop) found @ [url="www.skype.com Cheers, Drew [url=' alt='> [url='> Drew MS Partner / MS Beta Tester / Pres. Hi, It seems that both just crash to the desktop right after the big icon flashes through the screen. I've been googling this for quite a bit now. I tried using SFC command but no anomalies found. I tried using safeboot but that didnt help either. My only remaining guess is to reinstall (I cant even Refresh PC) or repair-install to get this fixed. Any suggestions before I do so? Thanks! I have been using windows 8 for a couple of months without issue, my screensaver is set to turn on after 5 minutes of inactivity. I recently bought the microsoft comfort 5000 keyboard/mouse combo, and after installing it, my screensaver no longer will start which is a security issue. Has anyone else had this issue, or could point me on how to fix it? I've tried uninstalling intellitype and that didn't work. View the full article

Hi, I only yesterday upgraded my Windows Vista HP PC to Windows 8 Pro and to be honest it was nothing but trouble up to now, for on like every second reboot there appears to be some random problem what I've encountered so far: - Damaged iso (I had to redownload the product so I could install it) - Sudden driver incompatibility (on the 3rd reboot suddenly I got a black screen before reaching the lock screen, after endless messing around with the BootCD and some research I finally found the latest Nvidia driver to be to blame (although it worked fine the last two times), so using a modification of this trick I found (I'd post the link if I was allowed to) I managed to u…

Just recently got myself a Microsoft Surface Pro (128 GB), enjoying it as a replacement to my laptop, but while carrying out some first time setup like I do on fresh installation of Windows, I bumped into an unusual situation I can't perform a full system image backup of my Surface Pro. The error occurred in the middle of a backup process and it stated the following: Check your backup Windows Backup skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes is not having enough free space. Free up some space by deleting unnecessary files and try again. Funny thing is, I'm backing up to a 1.5 TB external HDD that is more than enough to hold 128 GB of data. Did…

I know there are already a few threads related to monitor detection problems, but my issue seems to be somewhat unique... I'm running an HP p2-1394 and two AOC 2243W (21") monitors. Most of the time I have no problems, but every so often, my second monitor decides to quit working. Sometimes it occurs after Windows updates automatically, sometimes just randomly when I boot up. Both monitors appear to be detected when I look at the display settings, but the problematic monitor will read "No Signal" when I turn it on (it turns on with the computer when I boot up, but then shuts itself off once the login screen comes up). Under "Device…
