Has anyone done some testing in regards to doing the full system image from Windows 7 File Recovery versus creating and setting a CustomRefresh.wim with the recimg tool? The Refresh seems easier to perform in the event I need to restore the image and it won't affect my user files. The file size is also smaller. One downside I see is that I don't automatically get versioned images like I do with the W7FR system image tool, but that doesn't bother me since I've never restored an image beyond the most recent one I've made. Thoughts? View the full article

I have a laptop with Windows 7 64bit Enterprise on one partition, and Windows 8 64bit Enterprise on the other. I installed 7 first, then 8. For a while the system prompted for Windows 7 or Windows 8 at boot up. Recently Windows 8 had some problems and wanted to repair itself by reinstalling. I inserted the system disk and told it to go ahead. It had whiped out the software that I had installed (Office 2013 and Visual Studio 2012), which was fine, becuase this was a fresh build with no data. After it repaired itself, it was no longer prompting for the dual boot, it was going straight to Windows 8. The Windows 7 partition is still there. It is called SYSTEM and d…

Hello! I am trying to share my scanner whilst using remote desktop. I have enabled supported RemoteFX USB devices on both machines so that under 'local resources' (more button) my scanner now shows up (under the 'other supported remoteFX USB devices'). However when I connect, only the printers show up in devices on the remote machine as redirected, no other devices show up. Both machines are running win 8 pro with all latest windows updates installed. I have checked on the microsoft website, and 'supported USB devices' are supported using remote FX for win8 pro. What am I doing wrong? View the full article

I did an in-place upgrade from Win7 -> Win8 Pro. Now it won't hibernate. I've enabled the setting in the power control panel, but after shutting off the screen, it doesn't actually hibernate. I move the mouse, and it goes right back to the login screen. Sleep works fine however. I used the hibernate setting all the time under Windows 7. View the full article

Hello people, the sad thing about this story is that i only have this laptop 3 days and its already giving me a problem/headache. I cannot believe a newly configured laptop is like this. I have the new IdeaPad from Lenovo running on an i7 quad core and a 650M nvidia and 8 GB of Ram. 2 things I noticed is the fluctuation the RAM to 40% when clearly I am not even using 2. My CPU never clocks more than 40%..stable at 1-3%. Looking at my screenshots below, u can see that 3.2GB are in use....clearly they arent in the next screenshot. So i figured there is a Memory leakage. A heavy one. So please explain to me how I can solve this problem. I have run a registry optimizatio…

When I try to search for an application installed on my PC, (by pressing the search charm on the start screen or pressing Windows+Q on the desktop), on the top of the search box appears a message indicating that "search is not possible in this application". If I write some text in the search box (like 'calc', for example), no application is found. Also, if on the desktop I press Windows+X and select "Search", nothing happens. (Update -- Actually, someting happens, a new Windows explorer process is launched each time I select the "search" option. I end up with many of those processes in the task manager list, appar…

Hi, good day! The link to mini dump and memory dump is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qp3e1egtojksa6p/memory%20dmp%20and%20minidump.rar Below is additional info: I upgraded my old GPU, MB and PSU about 6 months ago but since then I keep getting occasional crashes and bsod (usually while playing games and watching videos). crashes usually end with the buzzing sound while the screen shows some plain basic colour screen or sometimes even distorted lines, but sometimes gets normal bsod. when it manage to show normal bsod, the message i see most is "IRQL_LESS_OR_EQUAL" These two events may or may not be related to crashes but it may help u to tr…

Can CHKDSK run at the time of start up on drives that do not have an assigned drive letter? If yes,

I have Windows 7 and Windows 8 installed separately on two different hard disks. Each OS is unaware of the presence of the other. Booting with each OS, I removed the hard drive letter assigned to the disk that contains the other OS. For example, when I boot using Windows 7, I do not see the drive containing Windows 8 and vice-versa. I believe I cannot use the CHKNTFS /X option to exclude one OS from checking the disk containing the other OS at the time of start-up as the drive containing the other OS does not have an assigned drive letter i.e. it is hidden. I do not want Windows 8 checking Windows 7 disk at the time of booting for errors. The same expectation holds t…

Recently I upgrade PC from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro. For the most part everything went well with the upgrade with some minor tweaks or upgrades to apps. I am having an issue with Libraries though. I have a share on my Server (Windows 2008 R2) which has Windows Search installed and indexing the shared folder location. On the windows 8 workstation I opened Explorer and when to libraries > Videos and then click on the Manage Tab. Selected Manage Library which brought up the Video Library Locations window. The Default save path is shown as well as the Public one. There is one other shown there but listed as unsupported. It is an old UNC path fro…

So I have a bunch of (completely legal) video files that I've collected over the years and I'd like to play them via Xbox Videos in Windows 8. However, I'm finding it hard to figure out how to organize them. If I have a series of TV shows, is there a way to keep them together and organized rather than spread out in alpha order? Is there a proper way to apply some tags to have a video file appear in "movies" rather than "other"? View the full article
