I just installed my second Windows 8 OS at home, had also done one at work. The first was a 'from scratch', the second an upgrade but 'leave nothing' The last one an upgrade and leave everything. But this last one comes up with the 'blueish/green' splash screen and has 'Press Ctrl Alt Del to sign in' in the top left corner. And indeed only then (not after a mouse click) the actual login screen appears. The first two don't have that. just a mouse click is enough to get the login screen. Why the difference? Tnx , Ben View the full article

Good Afternoon, I'm trying to add my corporate email to the Windows Mail client on my Windows 8 device and it seems that I cannot by-pass the prompt that requires me to input an online identity. I suppose this would be fine for home users but my employer blocks access to services such as login.live.com. View the full article

Hi all, I created 2 tasks in task scheduler to run at user logon: one that starts explorer.exe (to go to the desktop and skip the start page), and one that starts the RDP client in public mode. Even if I put a delay on the RDP, it always starts behind the explorer window. So I then tried some switches for explorer (/m, /MIN, mode SHOWMINIMIZED), also went in the user context's properties of file explore and selected "start minimized" and nothing works... I also tried all these switches in the run box and they don't work there either. Am I missing something? View the full article

I am trying to map a drive. When I do group policy results or group policy modeling. It shows this group policy as denied with the reason "empty". This is our first try at group policy preferences but it seems pretty straight forward so I don't know why it shows up as empty. View the full article

I am using an application to force my video card drivers to use Vsync. But is it possible to achieve the same using Windows registry? Or modifying some parameter file? I am using only the graphics card drivers provided by Microsoft as I found them to be the most stable ones. Thanks View the full article

All libraries "is no longer working" after few hours of PC is on. Delete-restore didn't help. Steps: Turn on PC Libraries "is no longer working". //"Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account." Press delete libraries. And restore default libraries. Take 10 minutes to add all folders. All works fine. Wait few hours (>8) or few restarts and it's again like on the image number 3. I've "Delete-restore" 4 times already for last week. Windows 8 Pro x64 English (clean setup, not an upgrade). This bug crashes libraries starting from the installing of …

I have noticed that my computer keeps doing something when it gets into monitor off state. I see that the hard drive gets active almost constantly and a floppy drive gets its light on. It goes in pretty noticeable pattern, like forever. If I force it into Sleep, it will wake up and do the same. Any idea? Thanks View the full article

Although I have synchronized my mail folders (by selecting them and clicking synchronize button on app bar), I see incorrections in inbox and also in the bin folders: 1- In inbox folder, the Win8 Mail app shows 8 e-mails, inclusive some I've deleted some days ago. In fact, right now, I only have 1 e-mail in inbox folder (using Hotmail.com through the IE10 browser). 2- In bin folder, the Win8 Mail app shows 1 e-mail I've deleted permanently many days ago. Currently, I have no e-mail in this folder (using Hotmail.com through the IE10 browser). I didn't check the other folders. I checked that all Win8 apps are updated. I tried to synchronize the Win8 Mail app many ti…

I live in Calgary but, help clients who may be in other cities, Provinces or Countries. Recently, I have worked remotely, using RA, w/ several clients who were newly installing Windows 8 (before the promo ends). In each case I have given them the Applications window and Desktop Toolbar. W/out exception, they all are excited to use it w/ those things, very happy w/ Windows 8, impressed w/ it for Features, technology and ease of use. Though familiar w/ 7 & XP and from 40 to 75 years old, they did not find it hard to now understand or enjoy Windows 8. Even, they heard negative things said or written about the OS yet, after I gave them the above 'tips' &am…

Three months ago, I purchased a brand new Windows 7 computer - Intel Core i7-3770/ 8.0 GB. During three months period, I had ZERO problems/issues with my computer. After receiving e-mails from Microsoft "What are you waiting for", I upgraded it to Windows 8. Since then, I have had two refresh, and four days ago, a clean install of Windows 8, because NOTHING WORKED. No refresh, no reset, no MS-DOS, no restore point, no repairs, etc... What to do when you get the following message on "the most stable", Windows 8, operating system? "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." I got …

I've discovered that my colour picker, the standard one that comes with Windows and is used in Paint, WordPad, Live Mail et al has many issues. It worked perfectly before and now I have issues. 1) seems like the Mask on the Fields is set to 2 as I can only enter 2 digits into any of Fields and RGB is (###, ###, ###) 2) if I select one of the custom colour boxes, then the picker crosshairs will not pick a colour until I move the arrow on right. Any suggestions? Is this a .Net update I shouldn't have allowed? (The colour picker for Office has no issues) TIA View the full article

I have a new Win 8 laptop with a GPT disk. In addition to the EFI and two recovery partitions, there is a large C and a large D partiotion. I would like to shrink one or both of these and make another partition, before or after D. What tools can I use to do this? The current setup is 300 mb EFI, 600 mb recovery, 184 gb C, 250 gb D, and 20 gb recovery partitions. This is a 500 gb drive. I have been told that if I shrink the C and D the recovery partiotions may be damaged and the disk wil be lost. I did a system image with Acronis True Image 2013 (older versions will not handle GPT disks) as well as Windows system and recovery disks but I really don't want to c…

In the upgrade to Win8Pro (clean installed) I moved around my hardware and ended up with a motherboard without a parallell port in the machine that shall have the printer. To resolve the issue I bought a VScom 011H UPCI board and after installing the Win7 drivers (no Win8 drivers exists) Windows found and installed the printer driver without any issues. The port for some odd reason showed up as LPT3 though. The printer works without flawlessly if selected from the print dialog but it doesn't show up anywhere else. Since it doesn't show up I can't make it the default printer, nor can I share it on my home network. The VScom board has no setting to change the port to LPT…

I was looking at an interesting Microsoft programming tool: TouchDevelop (see http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/touchdevelop/fe08ccec-a360-e011-81d2-78e7d1fa76f8) and wanted to download it to my Win 8 DesktopModern UI. 1. I could not locate the app in the Windows Store 2. When I clicked on the (free) download link (in the above URL) I got this: "You need to sign in with a Microsoft account on your phone before you can get apps from Windows Phone Store." Windows Phone Store? Never heard of it. I'm familiar with the Modern UI "Store". Question: How many Windows stores are there? (I hope there will not be a Windows &a…
