I'm working with an internet friend on an issue with her Windows 8 password expiration. She has Windows 8 and is unable to set the password expiration so it doesn't ask to change the password so often. I have Windows 8 Pro and I am able to use a couple of different methods to get into the advance User properties and reset the password expiration duration to whatever I want. She is unable to get to these options and is given an error that her version of Windows 8 does not use that snap-in. This individual is 88 years old and dearly loves her Windows 8 and sings its praises to anyone who will listen. However, she lives by herself and is the only one who ever uses her …

All, I cannot connect to any Win8 PC in my network. The error I receive is here - I have enabled remote desktop in Windows 8. I have disabled the firewall. I have done a telnet host 3389 to verify it is listening. This is a domain administrator account that I'm using. However, for the purposes of testing I also added the account directly to the remote desktop users group on the Win8 PC. Still no luck. Anyone offer any insight? i am using windows 8, and just got my computer a couple of weeks ago. no real issues at all outside of trying to navigate and learn the new windows 8 layout and paths for navigating, though that's all pretty well settled. i don't recall any real upgrades or updates. today my norton was alerting me to the need for a scan. i did it and all threats were resolved, and they were the small usual sorts. i turned on silent mode just in case. i downloaded windows movie maker as i could not locate it after trying and when i went to open it, the computer froze on a dimmed picture of my desktop wallpaper only for about three to five minutes then just came back with no opening…

I can usually figure stuff out on my own, but this one has been driving me nuts for 2 hours now as it's just one of those things that "should" just work. I've got a Win 8 test machine here with our MSDN copy of Win 8 on it. I'm trying to "add new features" and get it upgraded to Win 8 Pro with our MSDN Win 8 Pro Key. The Win 8 Pro key is input and accepted and the upgrade takes off. Upon 1st reboot feature installation gets to around 90%, then fails. 2nd reboot it tries again and immediately fails, then reverts the system to Win 8 Basic. Error upon logging reads: "Failed Adding Windows Features. Previous version of windows re…

Hello. I recently bought a Windows 8 Pro copy. I decided to use it because I used windows 8 pre-release and liked it. Now here is the problem. As on the pre-release version I didn't experience any crash when I installed W8 Pro I got first crash. I installed it again with. It turned on everything was fine until i reset it. It didn't start for a second time and I was forced to refresh the system and loose all my apps. After I launched fresh system it worked only for 1 day and then crashed again, now even without possibility to refresh it. As I'm trying to launch it everything I have is black screen and nothing more even if I'll wait longer than 20 minutes. I hope you'll b…

Well, when i move the mouse to botton left or hit the Windows Key + X combination, i get a menu with all the important items like Task Manager, Control Panel and others. However, if i click on any of these, i have like 10 seconds or more delay before i get the clicked item's window is opened. If i access any of these items from other locations, like apps search, windows get opened at once. Also, i noticed that if i right mouse click on a file to get a popup list of actions, it also take some time before i get the list to see. It is very strange, in Windows 7 I didn't have such thing. Any ideas on how to get that solved? View the full article

I was working on my laptop(Lenovo X201 tablet) when my windows 8 prompted that it will restart in 15 mins to install updates. I came back after an hour and the start up is stuck at "Please wait". It remained that way for about 12 hrs, after which I realized that something is wrong. (I am a student and this copy of windows 8 is downloaded from MSDNAA.) None of these work: 1. Refresh : Says that an error occured (Doesnt specify what error) 2. System Restore: No restore points available 3. Reset : Says that an error occured (Doesnt specify what error) 4. Automatic repair : Says, Couldnt repair your PC. 5. Safe mode: Gets stuck at "Please wait&a…

Hi, I have a brand new Lenovo Ideapad and have been having issues with Sleep. If I let the laptop go to sleep or hibernate it can't wake up again. Most of the time the screen just stays black and nothing happens so the only thing I can do is hold the power button to turn off and then back on. Sometimes the screen comes on but if I try to do anything I get a blue screen with the error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE My minidump file is here <iframe src="https://skydrive.live.com/embed?cid=51E0B69C6DDAE70F&resid=51E0B69C6DDAE70F%21248&authkey=ADzEsOlzvG-jbKI" width="98" height="120" frameborder="0&…

Good Morning, Being brand new to Windows 8 (just bought the Asus x202e and love it so far)... windows 8 is intriguing. A big problem I have with it, when I enter the documents folder and try to create a "new folder" it hands, the open window "is not responding" and then crashes. The only way I can create new folders is to make them on the desktop, then drag them to their destination where I wanted them originally. This computer is for school (Graduate)... this is annoying. Any possible fix suggestions? again, quick recap... creating new folders (other than on the desktop) makes windows 8 'window' hang and 'is not responding' a…

I dont know if this question has been asked, but here goes. I have noticed this problem since the time I installed windows8. I have connected my live account to windows8 and I use it to login. So at login time, if the internet is connected (usually wired) and i accidentally enter the wrong password, it shows the spinning 'Welcome' but gets stuck there. No combination of keys work and I never get a prompt to re-enter the password. The only way to fix this is by turning off the internet (pulling the wire ). That is when it says that the password is incorrect with the 'ok' button. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and is there is any fix to it. View…

<a href= I felt like mentioning this cause maybe some Folks aren't realizing it. People might hear about Clouds Services & off-premise data storage to most average users/consumers would mean little, if anything. Some people have more than 1 drive or partition in their machine & may or may not know why or what to do w/ it, in terms of data storage & or backing up files. Some people have external drives & maybe have auto functions doing sensible things @ regular intervals. Notice I said some people... Almost all people have data, files, documents, photos, images, that are important to them. Well, here's a safety net that m…

Hello all. I am running Windows 8 on a new computer. For years I have maintained a simple text file where I store all of my user names and passwords. I use Notepad to open and make additions/changes. The first time I changed and tried to save the file under Win8, instead of just saving it, it brought up the "Save As" dialog box and aked what name to save it as. I clicked "Save" to save it as the original name and it told me the file already existed did I want to replace it. I clicked yes. I then got a dialog box saying "Access Denied", nothing else, no explaination. I checked the Secutity properties of the file and I hav…

When trying to open some pdf files in Windows Reader I get an error 'can't open this file. There's a problem with the file format' - these files open fine with Adobe reader - which I don't really want to have if I don't need to. Is this a compatibility issue that hasn't been properly addressed in Windows 8? View the full article

I use a fingerprint reader to login to windows 8. If I lock the desktop it shows a screen with an avatar, my name and "Locked". If I click the avatar i wind up logged in and back at my desktop- i don't have to enter my password or scan my finger. Another user on this laptop doesn't use the fingerprint reader to login and when she locks she gets a similar "Locked" screen but has to enter her password to get back in. Any ideas? My Win 8 home box has two hard drives, E (source) and F (target). I want the content of the two drives to be identical, folder by folder. If I delete a file from E: I want that file to be deleted from the "copy" on F:. Clearly this type of sync should be incremental after the first full copy. What products can you recommend? edm2 P.S. I don't want the files on F to be compressed in some zip (or the like) file that I later need to restore. I don't want F to be an "image" of E either . I want E and F them to be identical in all respects. View the full article

Hi Guy's, Just wondering if I can get some help on this issue. I recently bought a Toshiba P850/040 laptop and upgraded to Windows 8 (Originally a Windows 7 Home Premium PC). I just recently found that I have a driver error, which is my DVD/BLU-RAY player (MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ260B). Anything out there to fix the problem? Would be the upgrade to Windows 8 that mucked it up? Thanks in advance! View the full article

My problem is that Windows 8 cuts off part of the the top and bottom of the display on the screen. I've looked for display settings to change things. I can't find anything. More detail: First, this is really easy for me to see because I use two computers with a KVM switch. One is running Windows 8 and the other is running Windows 7. The Windows 8 computer was upgraded from Windows 7. When the Windows 8 computer was running Windows 7, everything worked fine and no hardware was changed! Since it has been upgraded (... and ... I think that using the term "upgrade" for what has happened to that poor machine is an injustice and a lie ...) the image is fuzzie…
