For several days now, when I start my system in the morning ... YES! I insist on shutting down at night. I think Microsoft is TOTALLY WRONG in making it so HARD to shut down Windows 8 relative to Windows 7. The method I use is to go to Settings > Power > Shutdown. Wait for the monitor to turn off. Then press and hold the power button on the PC which initiates a hardware shutdown. ... the system does a "Scanning and Repairing Drive" ... Which takes five minutes or so but has always completed successfully and then Windows 8 boots normally. What is happening? Should I be doing something differently? View the full article

I am getting flat out tired of Microsoft not only moving around (hiding) options, but completely removing them. How the HELL do you turn off thumbnail auto-rotation? Sorry for the frustration, I am just tired of these products working against me, not with me. Searching around, it seems others are just as confused on this option. View the full article

Everybody has probably come across the metro app crashing issues immediately after execution. I have solved a couple of these issues so far. One issue I solved by adding "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" permissions to a registry key ("HKCLwow6432nodeinterface", group policy applying and excluding read access for this user), one by adding permissions to "C:Program FilesWindowsApps" directory (same user), another by adding permissions to "%localappdata%Packages" (same user again). The most annoying thing about troubleshooting these issues is that I don't understand the detailed behaviours and workings of how these…

Imagine the Ultimate edition that never was. This hypothetical beast would have all the best stuff from Enterprise and Pro, nothing more. Everything would be bundled in. Of course, it would be incrementally more expensive to cover Microsoft's costs for proprietary codec licenses, etc. There are things in Enterprise I like, but the volume licensing model doesn't seem to suit me. Basically I have a need for one copy. Pro, even with a free Media Center, doesn't compel me to upgrade. So... Basic question for those still sitting on the fence (i.e., who haven't yet bought Windows 8): If a Windows 8 Ultimate upgrade became available, say for the same price Windows 7…

I must be missing something. On the XBOX Music App, under "All Music" from the xbox music store it shows a couple of store based playlists. For example "Who's Next". When I select a playlist there doesn't seem to be any way to play it. It shows a random album cover that seems to be unrelated. If you click on any of the tracks XBOX Music will show the album that the track belongs to. Is this by design or am I missing a secret gesture. View the full article

Hugo award winner, writer and current president of the SFWA John Scalzi received his new computer around December 14 and at the time was interested in the start screen and "Windows Store App" mode. You can read his initial thoughts at: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/12/14/tech-notes-on-the-xps-one-and-windows-8 One month later he is installing Stardock and writes "I’ve come to believe the Win 8 start screen, and the whole environment it propagates is just terrible UI for those of us who actually use their computers for work, rather than using them just to play games and get on Facebook." He makes several good observations about his wo…

Hi all, I've never actually posted on a forum before, yet here I find myself. My laptop died Christmas day, and I said goodbye to the world to laptops.. I longed for the days when I had XP on an old desktop and my life with productively using computers was simple, figuring a tower set up to display thru my nice shiny 47" would be more suitable to my life but put too much stress on a laptop running it as dual display. That's what I wanted.... being a broke ass student who cant afford a Mac and windows vista, and even 7 machines no longer being sold, what I got was Windows 8 Been giving it a chance for a few weeks but it's simply not there yet.... I am terrib…

I have a laptop and a projector. The laptop is connected to the projector. How do I do the following? I would like to have 2 desktops in the laptop. (Let's call it desktop 1 and desktop 2). Only one desktop must be shown at a time in the laptop. I can easily switch between desktop 1 and 2 in the laptop. Desktop 2 should always be shown in the projector. ============ If I can do this, I can put my notes in desktop 1 and do demo in desktop 2. Thanks. View the full article

I am looking for official disc images of the Windows operating systems before Windows XP. I have contacted Microsoft, and they are unable to help me officially. They have redirected me to these forums, telling me that somebody here might still have any of the images. These images have been removed from Technet due to legal issues regarding Java. I am looking for images of the initial release, and the latest release, for each legacy operating system. If not too much trouble, a product key for each separate product would be nice as well. If I purchase the Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $70, am able to wipe out my current Windows 7 and install it clean instead of upgrade from Windows 7 to 8? I've heard/read somewhere that the Windows 8 Po "upgrade" only works for upgrade and you can't use for a clean install even though you already own Windows 7. If anyone knows the facts, please confirm. My Windows 7 has a lot of junk in it. I do not want to carry those over to Windows 8 with only an "upgrade" and not clean install. Thank you. Hello, I've just bought UPS. It has an option that if the battery goes down, it shutdowns the computer. I tested it, and instead of shutting down, the computer restarted. So I checked the command "shutdown /s" in cmd, just to check if there is a problem in the UPS, and the command does a restart too. The computer seems to be shutting down - even the message on the screen is "Shutting down" - but after it finishes, it just restarts the computer instead of turning off the power... Does anyone else have this problem with the shutting down command via cmd? Thanks, Guy View the full article

Ok, I am getting ready to do a test deployment of Windows 8 Enterprise for several users in my company. My only real question is how can I make sure that all the non LOB applications are removed. We don't want user using the Calendar app when we use Outlook and so forth. Is there a way to remove these apps permanently so we don't have show up at all. I know there is a app removal powershell script that can do this per user. View the full article

Hi, I have realized that, after upgrading my W7 to W8, a new folder called "Default.migrated" has appeared in the C:Users path The question is: Can I remove this "Default.migrated" folder safely? (as I have already done with Windows.old and $WINDOWS.~BT folders) Thanks in advance for the info. Regards. View the full article

My icons are locked in place for some reason. I'm not adverse to this, accept that I didn't knowingly cause it to happen. I would like to unlock them, arrange them to my liking and relock them in place. Is this possible, or is this yet another Microsoft fluke? God Bless, Mark A.
