I have purchased the Windows 8 upgrade from a retailer on the day it was released to the public and installed the 32 bit version onto my laptop which was running Windows Vista 32 bit at the time. My question is can I upgrade my Windows 8 to the 64 bit version without uninstalling the 32 bit software ? My laptop has an x64 based dual core processor running at 2.16 Ghz and 2 GB of RAM. In Windows 8 Pro pt-BR: <a href= The image above refers to the equivalent of Shop modern UI app (I guess it's in fact an IE10 page). This problem occurs in IE10 desktop web pages too. Using my Windows 8 laptop, I use two accounts. One is a domain standard user which I logon to the laptop with and the other is an administrative account which I only ever use in a Run-As context. Since moving to Windows 8 about four to five months ago, I am receiving regular UAC popups requesting that I enter my administrative credentials to make changes to the network configuration. I am connected to a stable wireless connection, so it's not a case of the connection is dropping on and off and causing something in the stack to require a restart. If I enter my credentials and accept the prompt, nothing changes, the network location, network type all remain the same and …

I have been running windows 8 pro for the last couple of months. It is fully updated, and has been running very well. All of a sudden at every startup, when I go to the windows desktop, the disk activity is high, keyboard and mouse response is very slow or non-existant. Starting task manager shows antimalware scan using approx 30% of processor. How can I stop this scan from running at every startup? View the full article

Windows 8 backup (Win7 File Recovery system image) creation to NAS device fails with error 0x807800C

Hi, I have a ZyXEL NSA310 NAS device on my network that I use for backups (as well as a media server). I have been very happy with it as, amongst other things, it has a gigabit Ethernet connection. I recently upgraded my home laptop from Win7 Pro to Win8 Pro. Under Win7 the NAS device worked perfectly as the backup target. I could back up file sets and - most importantly to me - create a system image on the device should I need to restore the system in the event of a full disk failure. When I upgraded to Win8 it kept the Win7 settings and it looked like it was just going to work, then as it came to create the system image it failed with error code 0x807800C5 and messag…

I've been using Windows 7 Backup and Restore in Win7 for years to create images of laptops and desktops, and I've used the images to restore machines when their HDDs crashed and had to be replaced. So I have a lot of confidence in its imaging and recovery abilities. So when I luckily found it buried in the Win8 control panel, I tried to use it to make a backup of my Dell Precision laptop (running Win 8 Ent x64). I use an external 1-TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex drive to write my backups, and it currently has 749 GB of free space. But when I attempt to make a backup of my C: Drive and the Recovery (System) volume, it returns an error that "There is not enough d…

Good day! Have a problem with new installed Windows 8 x64 box. System periodically crashes with different codes: BUGCHECK_STR: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, DPC_QUEUE_EXECUTION_TIMEOUT_EXCEEDED, etc. I analyze minidump with WinDBG, faulting module is ntoskrnl.exe, DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID is WIN8_DRIVER_FAULT. So I think problem is probably with hardware drivers, but I have no ideas. OS is fully patched from Windows Update. Motherboard is Asus P9X79 Deluxe, 2 hard drives are in RAID-1 based on on-board Intel RST, with addition of non-RAID 3-rd HDD attached to on-board Intel too. All latest hardware drivers from Asus site are installed. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and Wind…

Just an FYI in case the mods are taking feedback. 1. Windows Store Search (search Charm with the Store as the active App): Here, search behaves differently from when activated from the Start Screen or Desktop. For example, with Desktop search, type netflix and I get the NetFlix App in the big area and the Apps Category counter keeps up eventually showing 1. In App Store Search, type NetFlix, the Apps Category counter does not reflect the count until clicked. It's not a matter of what's displayed in the results area since in Desktop Search, Settings and Files counts keep up even when not displayed. Also, the results under Recommendations and the second group (Apps) a…

After resume with Power oder Keyboard all i get is a black screen. The fan is completely silent and the cpu get's hotter and hotter. no sound is playes, no network (ping) is responding. if i don't shutdown the notebook by force (press power for 10 seconds) it will overheat and die. I installed all Toshiba drivers and all windows update. Why: The tablet spends >90% of it's time comfortably docked, so.... Is there a setting that will return me to the Desktop when closing a Modern App instead of the Start Screen? Reason: I don't close an app with the intention of opening another, I close an App to close an app. This is just another 'extra step' Windows 8 has introduced to (for me) the most overwhelmingly common scenario. I'd like to avoid that. View the full article
