We made the mistake of purchasing a laptop with Windows 8 and MSN for Windows 8. These programs may be fine for smartphones or tablets, but for working computers, they are horrid and difficult to use. We really dispise the lack of Start Menu and MSN for Windows for pretty much everything. Is it possible to replace it with Windows 7 and IE 9? View the full article

Hi, so before i explain i just want to eliminate any confusion that this is NOT the black screen with the cursor hang issue. The "issue" or inconvenience i am having is after POST from my BIOS, i get a completely blank screen as windows boots, then it becomes blank but brighter as the windows 8 log in screen delays to fade it. It isn't the fact that i don't see the nice boot animation, but instead whenever any information needs to be displayed during or prior to boot i won't see it. This can range from start-up repair, checkdsk, and a number of other important messages or issues. It is impossible to know what my computer is doing, or if it just fro…

From the perspective of serious/business/desktop use of Windows 8... In my opinion Microsoft has actively degraded the user experience (UX) in various parts of Windows 8, presumably to encourage we users to use other parts they'd like to see become more popular. The obvious ones, discussed many times, include removal of clickable elements and visual styles in the desktop UI, including the Start button, Show Desktop button, etc., and reducing discoverability by hiding functionality in edges and corners. We really don't need to talk about the Start button again here. But beyond the above, there are subtle UX degradations I'm not sure everyone has noticed, which must h…

Seriously, Microsoft??? This same error has been coming up since Windows XP! It is January 2013. Windows 8 64x. Attempting to install Adobe 9, getting this same error. I run mmc services - the services IS started, IS set to manual, and the option to change the startup is grayed out. I am an administrator on my machine. I tried the following in a cmd.exe window "Run as Administrator". > msiexec /unregister > msiexec /regserver > net stop msiserver > net start msiserver The service reported it successfully stopped and started. Still won't install, and anything else that uses the Microsoft Windows Installer won't inst…

I keep getting the a message with the following error code 0x800cc0f. I have repeatedly used the repair button in Outlook to let Windows fix the issue. It sync the problem and it works for awhile but the message comes back. I have tried to redo the set up to no avail. I've Goggled the error message and it indicates that it is an IMAP problem. The response is to turn of the e mail scan. I don't necessarily want to do this. Does any one have a suggestion on how to correct this situation. I also have a laptop with Windows 8 and I set it up the same way and it works fine. The only difference I can see is that on the laptop I use McAfee and the on the PC I have Tren…

I have recently installed windows 8 and noticed that I hadn't had any free discspace left. After installing windows 8 I had about 40 GB's left. I found out dat the windows edb file was nearly 40 GB's. I read that it has to do with indexing and that you can shut it down. However it doesn't seem the same in windows 7. I can shut ik down for 15 minutes and also change its location. I did this but now the file is still increasing on my other harddisk. Does anyone has the same problem and kwows a structural solution? My W8 machine lives on a LAN with four other computers (W7 and XP). I was led down the garden path to installing W8 with a hotmail profile, but I really need to change it to a local account to match the other four computers on the LAN. How can I do this so the w7 and xp machines can exchange files with the w8 machine? View the full article

Suppose my computer is a WSUS client and I don't have the instalation disk for Windows 8 (seems stupid to me that you need the Windows 8 install disk or the iso just to install Net Framework offline, but nevertheless it's a feature). Of course when I try to add the Framework 3.5 from Add/Remove Features it gives an error 0x800F0906 when I click on Download files from Windows Update because it checks on WSUS for the package. Is there some other way? Don't bother to ask why I don't download the iso because I'm on a slow connection and even if I weren't such an offline install solution sounds veeeery stupid. Thank you in advance. RR IT Professional View the full…

Hello all, In my 20 years as an IT Professional, I have never felt the need to comment/discuss/rage about an OS.....until Windows 8 came along. A bit of background- I am an IT Manager. I look after 80 users spread across 3 sites...all of which use a PC/Laptop of some sort. I am the only person in the IT dept. 4 days in and this is my conclusion of Windows 8 - I don't want Windows 8 for my users. I will be doing my utmost to try and obtain previous versions of Windows for my staff. Those versions can be Windows XP, Windows 7...or even Windows Vista. My main supplier is Dell, but my suspicion is that Dell will start touting Windows 8...and soon, previous versions …

Hi All, Is there a way that I can arrange and pin program shortcuts to the start screen in such a way that every user that logs in the computer has the same format and arrangement? The thing here is we would like to remove those shortcuts not needed and replace them with the most used ones. We would like to deploy that setting to all users who logs in in the computer. So. Windows 8 running on an ASUS laptop. Apparent bug in Cisco software prevents Windows 8 connecting to WLAN (802.11W problem). So downgrade driver for WLAN card to W7 version, and PC will not boot. Goes into Automatic Repair which cannnot fix problem. Cannot boot in Safe Mode because it appears AR is getting there first. Had to System Restore just to replace the driver (and reinstall all the other software I've put on since the restore). This sucks....wasted 4 hours trying to find a solution. View the full article

I am running Windows 8 Pro x64 with the latest updates. Recently I've noticed that in task manager under the performance tab, the CPU section reports my speed at 3.50 GHz all of the time. I know for a fact that my CPU downclocks when under low load because my motherboard's software shows CPU frequencies and the temperatures of the components drop accordingly. Thus, I expected the speed in task manager to reflect this. However, my speed is at a constant 3.50 GHz even though downclocking and turbo clocking are working fine. Are there any diagnostics I can do to investigate this issue or is there not an issue? View the full article

your computer appears to be correctly configured but the device or resource (computer name) is not responding that is the error message I am getting in windows 8 machine, which is trying to access the shared folder from windows 7 machine. Windows 7 machine can access the folders in the windows 8 machine but not the other way around. I tried to ping windows 7 machine from windows 8 but the ping didn't work, but it works from windows 7 the firewall is turned off in both computers View the full article

There is nothing wrong w/ going from Desktop to the Start screen w/ its Tiles for some or all things OR going to WinQ for things OR pinning a bunch of stuff OR having icons all over the Desktop BUT, You might like this approach... It means not having to do any of the 3 things mentioned above. The Applications window sits on the Taskbar. Please note the use, employment of Desktop Toolbar, greatly facilitates ease of navigation & allows screen to be 'clean' of icons. <a href= Cheers, Drew [url=' alt='> Drew MS Partner / MS Beta Tester / Pres.
