Look at 2009 [/b](that's before Windows Phone 7). It has live tiles! You click on them them and they expand to full screen. All the other "applications" apparently still run when that happens. The design, look and feel of the UI is very metrofy, too. For example: There is no search box, yet the GUI is searchable (notice the popping up letters) Screenshot: (you should see the [url=" video though to notice the live-tile aspect) [url= View the full article

I'm curious: has Win 8Server 2012 "tightened" security over Win 7? If so, is there an article describing this? edm2 P.S I was looking for an Antivirus solution for Win Server 2012 and ran across this insightful pdf (Win 8) http://www.avira.com/files/support/EN/Avira_W8_2_EN.pdf They show the results of running the Win Upgrade Assistant (several common apps failed) and talk about Microsoft redoing APIs which causes developers headaches. I suspect that despite the very similar looking Win 8 Desktop (similar to Win 7) that there may be some deeper architectural changes that aren't so evident. View the full article

I have an app dll that refuses to register in Windows8. It worked fine in Windows7. Some users report it works OK on there system but most report the same error When we run regsvr32 to register the dll, it generates an error that says it was loaded ok but the call to DLLRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005. Research on this error says it corrected by running with elevated rights. We run the process as an Admin. We have tried opening CMD prompt as an Admin, turned off Windows Defender, disabled Windows Firewall and also tried doing it in Safe Mode. Every attempt always returns the same error code. I have tried multiple searches but all say just to run in an…

I got Win8 Media Center and installed it fine and no problems on that score (with the exception of the fact that I think requiring a separate Key for it than is required for Win8 has made things idiotically complex. For instance, my present Media Center key expires 2/1/13 or so. What happens if I need to do another install of the OS after that date? It does not appear that Media Center will be able to follow me cleanly--and I *hope* Microsoft will be coughing up a key that works when I need it.) What was surprising about Win8 MC in a negative sense was the fact that certain Fox DVDs utilize a playback format that seems to require DVD playback through Media Player, w…

I work for a non-profit, and while I prefer Win8 our policy is to install Windows 7 Ent on everything. We recently bought 3 new systems with Windows 8 pre-installed (Acer CX600). I can not get Windows 7 to install! Is this even possible, or do we need to return the system? View the full article

Hello, I recently finished building my first computer. I mistakenly installed windows 8 and it has been a disaster. After finally getting it installed any time I tried to install a driver, or even just Google chrome, my computer will freeze. I have no control of the mouse or keyboard and I am forced to manually shut down the computer. Is there a fix for this windows 8 freezing issue? View the full article

I am migrating our office from a workgroup to a Server 2012 Essentials server. Things have gone smoothly with the Win 7 desktops where the local user account migrated automatically. The problems started with the Windows 8 machines where the migration is not automatic. I have used the Easy Transfer wizard to backup my profile, but when I try to port it to my new domain account, there is no option to select the domain user--only my previous local user. I read in another post where the problem is related to the local user being a "Microsoft Account" user, and my account was of that type when I ran the WETW. What do I need to do to get our three Win 8 u…

I still have no wireless mouse or keyboard and no one seems to know how to fix it but I came across another problem today. I got the free serial number emailed to me from Microsoft and attempted to follow the instructions and download it. As mentioned I have no keyboard so using a wired mouse I cut and pasted the '"Add Features" into the search box as instructed. All I got in the settings tab is a box that enables me to turn Windows features on and off. There is nothing there at all about adding new features. How do I find the download so I can install it. I have never known an operating system as complicated and awkward to use and for a Microsoft keyboa…

Starting this morning whenever I tried to sign in to Hotmail (IE 10 Desktop) the URL would flash between -- I think -- Hotmail.com and live.com and then tell me it encountered a problem and to try to login later. I verified that other sites requiring the same authentication (e.g. SkyDrive) didn't have this issue. (At this time the "Modern" IE 10 seemed to work fine but later on it began displaying the same behavior as the Desktop version). I fired up a new Windows 7 VM, IE 9, went to Hotmail and successfully logged in. Next I disabled all Start-up Addins for IE 10 Desktop but now when I try to login to Hotmail I get a 5050 answer: 50% of the time the application crashes…

I just purchased a new computer about a month ago. Everything is working fine hardware-wise. Within the past day I have been unable to use file explorer. I click on any folder on my desktop and in the taskbar it shows that the correct folder is open, but there is no display. I had the same problem with Google Chrome, but after a computer restart Chrome is working. I can click on any folder and none will display. When I hover over it, the small view of the folder is there. Can I receive some help with this problem. Thanks Itouchmaniac View the full article

We have recently installed a Windows 8 Pro edition OS on one of our 64bits laptops, and the installation works great. Installation of programs have worked fine (such as Office and Opera webreader), but when installing latest versions of java (Version 7 Update 10), both 32 & 64, the installation stops and shows an error. We downloaded Java from the official site and the Windows 8 is activated with our valid key recieved via e-mail. Below roughly translated errormessage from google translate: "Can not open thisinstallation package. Verify that the package exists and that youhave access to the one, or contact the applicationvendor to verify that this is a valid Windows …

Hello everyone, I recently installed Windows 8. I have some issue, but I'm not sure if it's a feature or a bug. When I minimize a tile, the sound from it is decreased immensely. For example, if I open IE10 from the app tile, and open a YouTube video and play it, when I switch the screen to something else, such as Desktop, the sound is decreased dramatically. The same happens even when I open Xbox music and switch out. Is there some way around this? Thanks What is a signature? View the full article

I thought this might just be one PC, but am finding this problem on home, work and even my Surface RT. Sometimes when viewing web pages (or graphics in metro apps that use IE to display content like a newsreader) a graphic will be replaced or mangled with a what looks like green video noise, and sometimes part of the previously viewed graphic is part of it. It's hard to describe without seeing it, but it shows up on pages with lots of graphics boxes like news blogs (sites like a Buzzfeed or Google News). This is what happens: Its very very common, and I thought it might be video drivers (mostly use AMD), but when it happened on my Surface I found this to be more co…

My system has a third party raid controller on which I have installed Windows 8. Everything works except recovery mode. When I run recovery mode I don't have any of the normal options I am used to seeing in safe mode. I have to load into System Image Recovery, add my RAID driver, and go back to the main recovery mode screen before it will detect my installation. It seems to be too late by then for any safe mode options to be displayed. In Linux I am accustomed to adding any needed third party drivers to the 'boot image' if I need them loaded before the kernel. Would adding the drivers to the Windows 8 install image also add them to the Windows boot image after install? Ca…

Hello, I just installed windows 8 pro on my working computer. I work a lot with virtual machines for special os setups. Recently I used Virtualbox for those machines. But with windows 8 pro VBox says there is not VT-X available ... (mainboard and processor support vt-x and it is enabled) Well it was available before I switched to windows 8 pro. I search the net and found a hint that hyper-v might be the cause. I had hyper-v installed because I am planning to migrate to hyper-v from vbox. I uninstalled hyper-v and vt-x was available again. Question now is why does hyper-v does disable vt-x for other hypervisors or even better how can i prevent this ? View the fu…

I installed Windows 8 on a Acer Extensa 5620Z, which ran perfectly well with Windows Vista. My first installation with Win 8 ran fine, but then Win 8 started to update itself and now it keeps stalling the computer, leaving vertical black stripes in the screen. The computer does not run for 10 minutes without stalling. Youtube videos will stall it instantly. When I remove the update, it starts working again. Memory and harddrive are obviously fine. What am I to do? View the full article
