Partition E

B

b11_

When I open "my computer", I see a partition labeled E. The total size is
blank. The free space is blank. I tryed to access E but the message "E is not
accessable' appeared.

I am certain that E does not actually exist so I would like to delete it. I
tryed deleting various drivers in the Device Manager window but that did not
solve the problem. How can I delete partition E?

C:\Windows\command\FDISK.
(We assume you have no USB drive or device connected at boot.)
If FDISK does not show drive E: suspect a virus or malware.

Drive E: might be a removable drive like an optical drive (CD or DVD),
flash drive, digital camera or external USB hard drive.

The problem comes up now/then at this site.

(1) "START button, Find, F/F, Autorun.inf".
I guess one of those can do it, if in a root directory, such as
"C:\" or "D:\".

(2) Some drivers can do it, purposely. Did you install something big

(3) "START button, Run, SysEdit". Is there a "SUBST" command in
Autoexec.bat? That would do it.

(4) Did you create a CVF (Compressed Volume File)? That would do it.

(5) "START button, Run, MSInfo32". Use CTRL-Mouse to highlight relevant

b11_, since you are unsure that NTFS partitions work in the NT source code
while FAT partitions are the 9x source code and previously DOS then I suggest
you consult an IT Professional. Have a nice day.

In order to fix the corruption, you need to find out what the corruption is.
For instance, you need to determine whether or not FDISK sees that
partition. Boot to DOS and at the command prompt type FDISK /STATUS and
report the results.

Open Device Manager and look for something that might be reporting to the
operating system that it needs a drive letter assigned, such as CD or DVD
drive.

You also need to describe when this partition first appeared and what
happened immediately before it appeared, such as what changed in the
machine, or what software you installed or what upgrade you did.

I booted a different partition and looked in the My Computer window but did
not see it. I believe that there is some curruption. Would restoreing an old
registry solve the problem?

I agree with Richards that further investigation must be first! Post the
results I have asked for, & "START button, Run, SysEdit" to post both
Autoexec.bat & Config.sys for examination.

It's not possible to know what would solve the problem without knowing what
the problem is.

What result did you get when you booted to DOS and used FDISK /Status?
What was the result of looking in device manager for devices that might be
using a drive letter?
What have you found out about changes that were made just before the new
partition appeared?

It would be helpful to know the operating system involved.

Please repost with the reason you think this is so.

Partition specifications are stored on the hard drive itself and are
not dependent on the operating system in use at any particular time
for their existence. As mentioned by other posters, use a partitioning
utility like fdisk to diagnose the problem.

I'd do the same thing in a DOS window. Some devices, eg USB/Firewire
HDs and flash drives, may not be detected by the BIOS and/or DOS.

A difference between the two results (DOS boot vs DOS window) would suggest
a source for the drive letter such as you have referred to. But I think the
issue is getting OP to follow any logical diagnostic procedure. He wants
answers, not suggestions for more research.

The problem with your posts b11_ is that it is very difficult to understand
you. You state a problem and then post back and do not seem to be willing or
perhaps able to follow advice from posters such as Jeff Richards, MVP. We
have tried to help you with your computer problems but I feel at least that
it is now high time for you to try and help yourself by working with an IT
professional, studying up on computers, and doing things to help yourself
present a logical thought process and being able to post back the results of
suggestions from people like Jeff Richards who asked you to do a task. I
know a lot about computers mainly through reading some computer books and
lots of trial and error with computers throughout the years starting with
programming in BASIC (easy programs such as making sounds and having the
screen flash different colors --- lots of fun when I was really young) on my
IBM PCjr to my current dual-boot 98SE/XP Professional computer but now I want
formal training with A+ Certification to help me reach a new and higher
level. I am studying All-In-One A+ Certification Exam Guide in the 5th
edition that was requested by my school although they apparently already have
a newer 6th edition. It may be simple for one of us to accomplish the tasks
that MVP's ask us to do but perhaps it is beyond your level of expertise in
which case it would make sense to try and read books and learn from other IT
professionals to help you in your case. I feel sympathy towards you and your
situation(s) with computers but I cannot help you much as I would like to if
you cannot help yourself by learning more from books, IT Professionals and by
listening to advice from other users who respond to you especially when it is
such good advice from people like Jeff Ricards. I will now have to limit my
replies to you in the future until such time as I notice that you are willing
to change. Ben, I did reply to your post but this post is directed to b11_
and not you of course. Sorry about the user error on my part. Have a nice
day, b11_!
