Look out, it's like alcoholism. It's a progressive disease and gets worse
over time even if you don't indulge! Next time you sit down to XP, you'll
notice that both your legs will immediately turn black (way beyond purple.)

I see! And I guessed as much!

The OS is W98.

I tryed an old registry but that did not solve the problem.

I ran a partition utility but saw no "E".

I booted a different partition and looked in My Computer but did not see "E".

No USB devices are attached to the computer.

| The OS is W98.
|
| I tryed an old registry but that did not solve the problem.
|
| I ran a partition utility but saw no "E".

What utility & when was it run-- before or after booting the OS that
shows this E:partition?

| I booted a different partition and looked in My Computer but did not
| see "E".

Then, it likely is something the original partition does. Could be it is
setting up a "software" E:partition. Or, could be the OS that doesn't
show E:partition is hiding it by some setting in Device Manager.

| No USB devices are attached to the computer.

But are they ever attached & just unplugged at the moment?

I think I STILL want to see the following results, after booting the OS
that does show E:partition...

(1) "START button, Find, F/F, Autorun.inf".
I guess one of those can do it, if in a root directory, such as
"C:\" or "D:\". Put such an .inf into the Recycle Bin!

(2) Some drivers might legitimately do it. Did you install something big
to the OS that shows E:partition & not to the other?

(3) "START button, Run, SysEdit". Is there a "SUBST" command in
Autoexec.bat? Post both Autoexec.bat & Config.sys.

(4) Did you create a CVF (Compressed Volume File)? That would do it.

(5) "START button, Run, MSInfo32". Use CTRL-Mouse to highlight relevant
info & the Edit menu to copy & post it. Here is mine...

Windows-managed swap file on drive C (6458MB free)
Available space on drive C: 6458MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 6232MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive E: 773MB of 2792MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive F: 7979MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive G: 7786MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive H: 7620MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive I: 6174MB of 6174MB (FAT32)

(6)
(a) "START button, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt"
(b) FDISK /Status
(c) Use the "MARK" button, outline text with mouse, & the
"COPY" button to post the results. Here are mine...

There is a potential, which MAY cause this problem.

If an application was installed when, say the CDROM was drive E for some
reason, there may be a residual INI, setup file, registry entry, or other
which MIGHT cause a phantom E drive/partition [could even be a Send To
issue].

Otherwise, I would lean towards the USB having been used at one time for a
flash drive, external hard drive, or something along those lines.

| There is a potential, which MAY cause this problem.
|
| If an application was installed when, say the CDROM was drive E for
| some reason, there may be a residual INI, setup file, registry entry,
| or other which MIGHT cause a phantom E drive/partition [could even be
| a Send To issue].

..INI's can be searched this way...

(a) "START button, Find, F/F"
(b) Enter... *.ini ...in the Named box
(c) Enter... E: ...in the Containing Text box

Careful, though. It catches things like "FILE:", too. Nine such .ini's
came up that way for me! Open them in Notepad to see what it caught!

The Registry can be searched too, but it is quite slow without a 3rd
party tool, such as...

http://www.pcmag.com/
PCMag's "Registry Detective" (take "RegEdit+ too) is better than a naked
RegEdit search, because it will only find an item once, if there is a
"mirror" elsewhere. Also, it will find items in binary fields, which
RegEdit does not. Finally, it finds ALL matches in 10 seconds & puts
them ALL to the screen. There is a Details button for further
examination of the Key. The search criteria can be adjusted and narrowed
in various ways. There is a button to click that will get one into
RegEdit+ (or RegEdit) open to that Key. I only wish there were an easy
way to copy/post the Keys that were found in the search.

| Otherwise, I would lean towards the USB having been used at one time
| for a flash drive, external hard drive, or something along those
| lines.

I wouldn't bet against it!

Keeping in mind that E is not formatted, if I look under System Properties
then under Performance, I see the message below:

Drive E is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system

Both Config.sys and Autoexec.bat are empty.

What result did you get when you booted to DOS and used FDISK /Status?
What result did you get when you opened a DOS session from within Windows
and used FDISK /Status?
What was the result of looking in device manager for devices that might be
using a drive letter?
What have you found out about changes that were made just before the new
partition appeared?
