My new, clean install of 32 bit Lucid Lynx Ubuntu 10.04 recognizes all 4

GB of my RAM. Ya can't do that with Windows, folks. 32 bit XP only

recognizes 3.5 GB.

At least I know I'll be able to boot from one day to the next.

If you're running 32 bit Windows 7, it doesn't matter how much RAM you

buy, Windows and the seven dwarfs will only recognize a bit more than

3GB. Also, with Windows (of any flavor), there is *never* a guarantee

that you will be able to boot from one day to the next.



That's two strikes. Care to make it three?

Well actually, 32 bit windows does recognize the ram, it just won't be able

to use all of it due to the address space limitation of 32 bit windows. No

place to map the extra ram to, therefore it will go unused.

It can map around 4gb, but some of that will get used by hardware resources,

so yes the amount of " available" ram will be somewhere around 3.25 gb on

average.

Of course, 64 bit windows does not have this limitation and will certainly

make use of more ram.

I run 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium and it makes nice use of my 6gb of

installed ram, and runs very well on my system.

sufficient for you to up-grade your computer system to 64 bits

although 64 bit processes have been in the marketplace for quite some

Glad it worked for you. Ubuntu sucks... No sound since 8.04 and spotty

network problems with this new version. I loaded Redhat Fedora the

version of Redhat Fedora I'm using is months behind the new Ubuntu and

Fedora is light years better...



Anyone reading this is better off loading windows98 or Windows2000,

you'll get better functionality than any flavor of Ubuntu...

No it will not show the full 4 Gig even using the PAE switch. .You can use the

either the 3GIG switch or the PAE switch it will not get a 32 bit XP showing all of

the 4 GIGS. Now a 64 bit XP will show up to 32gig .

my needs so that I don't have to gate-crash Linux-ubuntu newsgroups

(assuming there are any out there)!



In any case majority of Windows 7 systems these days are on 64 bit

architecture so memory recognition is not a problem.

I do know that PAE is dependent on hardware & BIOS capabilities.
