Updates for AdAware and Spybot

H

Heirloom

ZAPro lets you know what is trying to "phone home." I have been most
pleased with the app. Process Explorer will also alert you to anything
"active" (you have to be watching, however), but, it does keep about a 5
minute graph of everything that is or has been active.

Dumped Adaware 2007 this evening. Did the usual 'Add/Remove' routine, it
left folders and files and a crap load of stuff in the registry that had to
be manually deleted. Double checked with jv16 Power Tools and it found
nothing....I did good!
Heirloom, old and Comodo sounds like a
dragon or something you would dump in.
(but, I'll check it out anyway)

The reason I use 'Avast' is, that I ran into trouble with AVG a while back
and after experiencing with the one you are or were using, I am hung up on
Avast, to my delight, I might add. Daily automatic updates are just one of
the many laudable features. You'll see, <g>.

You done good, Loon. Yeah, I know re ZA......just got lazy in my old
age. Perhaps I might put it back on here.

I use jv16 as well and don't trust the other ones. I did look at
Comodo's website and yes, that is where it comes from.....the Komodo
Dragon.

Yawn......heading off to bed. I will think about this on the weekend.
What AV are you using??

Kissies......the Cat.

Hi, Heather,

FWIW, I've been using AntiVir and highly recommend it if you're using XP
Professional. It opens a nag screen when it updates, but it's possible
to disable the screen in XP Pro using the security policy editor.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to do this with XP Home.

I gave up on CA's AV app quite a while ago, used Avast for a while, and
then settled on AntiVir.

Cheers,
Tom

Alias,
I did check out Comodo, it compares closely with the free and paid
version of ZA. As I am using the ZAPro and am happy with it, I will simply
keep the Comodo in mind for future use. May put it on the wife's
laptop.....after I go through the effort of removing all the crappy
'trialware' that it is currently infesting it, to include AOL and NIS!!
(that's going to be fun!)
Heirloom, old and buyers should have the option
of having trialware

Computers don't come with trialware if you buy the OS seperately. If you
buy it installed, the trialware brings the price down some. The software
makers pay the hardware vendors to stick their ads on there. I got a new
IBM machine that came with a TON of trialware and junk icons on the desktop.

Did it at least come with disks? The most annoying trend these days is
package machines that don't come with disks for the OS, where they give you
an option to create "restore" disks which will reinstall your OS for you
(including trialware) and can require as much as 13 blank CDs.

Thanks Tom....but I am using XP Home. I figure I am safe for a while
with my *dead as a doornail* EZ Trust monitoring stuff. May go for
Avast, and then again.....may go for AVG. For now, anyway.

Your preaching to the choir, Eric. Yep, I know about pre-packaged machines
coming with all the crap ware.....I just think that when paying for
something, you should get the choice of what goes on. And, no, it did not
come with the OS discs....
it didn't even come with recovery discs! One has to make their own. I put
everything on DVD's and it only took 1.5 or so.

I will be making a backup using Acronis to a 250G USB 2.0 external, 7200rpm
HD. Incremental backups will be made until everything is cooking and a
final configuration is setup....well, close to final. This drive will be
kept off location until needed and is big enough to backup the wife's laptop
and my desktop (compressed).
Heirloom, old and a good house cleaning is
in order
