Dual Boot for WinME and Win2000?

[webster72n]

Is dual boot for WinME and Win2000 feasible and/or recommendable for the
home user? I'm almost certain it is feasible, but is it recommendable also?
Ubuntu and WinME don't seem to like each other, at least in my case.
Adding Win2000 would give me additional opportunities I would like to have.
Any and all comments are welcome, thank you.

Using a third party boot manager such as BING allows virtually any OS to
multi-boot with another. The only limit being the number of OSs and
partitions on your hard drive and BING can handle up to, I think, 256
partitions although, of course, only four primary or three primary and an
extended partition can appear in the partition table at any one time.

Even though your reply doesn't provide the direct answer to my question, it
brings me to my follow-up question:
Before installing Win2000 on the second drive with a yet "unallocated" file
system (unformatted), should the drive be partitioned and formatted
beforehand, or can this be done during installation?
I have PM8, including BootMagic, installed to help me with the dual boot, as
well as with any partitioning or other related problems, should they arise.

How you install your second OS is up to you entirely and yes, I answered
your question which was "is dual boot for Win Me and Window 2000
feasible?" mentioning that IMO the best method of so doing is to use a
third party boot manager. I also stated (by implication) that Ubuntu and
Win Me could be dual booted on the same system. As to your second
question whether I would recommend this for a home user, I intentionally
chose not to answer leaving that for you to decide for yourself. The term
home user covers a wide range of skills with many happily multi-booting
several OSs whilst others can barely use the one they have.

I have not used Boot Magic as a boot manager for about 8 years so am
unwilling to comment on how best to use this boot manager. I don't recall
PM's capabilities and have never used PM8 (it might have been PM6 I last
used) however I have a rule that I never allow any OS to see another using
my boot manager to either hide or remove from the partition table
partitions containing other OSs. I also tend to install into partitions
that I have already created but whether I format first or not depends on
the OS I am installing and I cannot recall the options available when
installing W2K. This may have changed but one feature of Boot Magic that
I did not like was that to use it it was installed on a partition
containing an operating system meaning that that partition has always to
be present although I'm guessing one could also boot from a floppy,
whereas a boot manager such as BING can be installed in its own 8MB
partition meaning that no OS is dependent on the presence of any other
partition with even the BING partition being hidden or removed from the
partition table when running the OS.

It's not a question of superiority, Alias. To burn an iso image file with a
free burner, I need W2k, because it will not work under ME. Once W2k is
installed, I will be able to burn the image for the mini installation of
ubuntu to CD and, hence, finally install ubuntu on my machine. As you can
see, I haven't given up on it, just chosen a different route.
What is it I need to know about the W2k drivers?

??? You want to install Windows 2000 just to burn an ISO image with
your CD burner? Why can't you do this with Windows ME? Might be easier
to try different burning software instead of installing a different OS.

If you find that these burners don't work it could be an ASPI driver
problem.

That's where my problems start, Alias, I thought you were up-to-date on my
situation, but that's not the case. As a matter of fact I have the two
latest versions at my disposal, but I can't run them, because of the
screwed-up desktop image.
The security catalog file of the disk is branded as "invalid" in my system.
When I tried to install the 'mini version' of ubuntu, I encountered two
errors, forcing me to abandon the installation and being fortunate not to
have had major problems:
1. my network hardware could not be detected and
2. out of all available mirror archives none was to be found for me.
In the forum I was advised to "Burn the ISO Image" to CD instead of the
"Data".
Hence my attempts to obtain the free burner.
Adaptec CD Creator is in my reservoir, but it can only create data and audio
cd's.
On top of it there seems to be a conflict between Adaptec and DeepBurner,
with me probably having to uninstall Adaptec first.
I'll have to work that out.

Thanks John. The problem seems to be a conflict between my Adaptec CD
Creator and the DeepBurner. When I get to the 'burn iso' situation, I have
only the 'erase' button available, the 'cancel' and 'burn iso' buttons are
grayed out.
I suspect that's because of 'Adaptec'.
I am downloading and will install and try your second offer.

Or are you trying to make an ISO image from the CD's?
Can you supply a link to the forum that says
'Burn the ISO Image'?

Harry......Adaptec is horribly outdated. What version do you have?? 3
or 4?? Dump it and get Nero or Roxio (Roxio bought out Adaptec eons
ago). I happen to use both of them, but you have to buy them.

I think you are going to mess up again if you get into this ISO
business. Just use WinME and leave that other weirdo Ubuntu stuff
alone. You seem to have a *black cloud* over your head when it comes to
computers, grin.

George, I just finished 'burning' the 'mini iso' image to CD with
'DeepBurner'.
After downloading the second offering from John, I went back to DeepBurner
and whooallaa, it worked. I did get the 'iso' image for the
mini-installation from the ubuntu forum, since I couldn't get the 'live' CD
from Ubuntu to work.
Now I have the CD I am supposed to have, according to opinions in the forum
and will proceed to install ubuntu and see if it will work.
Will let you know later if it did - or not (no way).\

I would prefer if you kept 'your opinion' to yourself, Heather, at least
when it's negative. I happen to be 'mostly' optimistic.
There are no problems with 'Adaptec' and as far as 'Ubuntu' is concerned,
I plan to 'make it work', like it or not.
I am sure greatful for the magnificent support I've found, here and with the
ubuntu forum. Don't worry about 'any' clouds, dark or otherwise, please.
Everything is working like clockwork on this machine (knock on wood?).

I happen to be "honest"......not negative. Adaptec is so out of date,
it is pitiful. I had it on my WinME computer.....it came with it 7.5
years ago. Is that a clue?? I then put Roxio 6 on that one. Worked
way better.

But you never listen to reason and seem to love to mess up your
computer, so just keep on doing what you do best.....LOL.
