Zone Alarm Blocking

A

Angel

Can anyone explain why I am getting this message about outgoing block.
Zone Alarm blocked:
Rating Date & time Type Protocol
Source IP Destination IP
Medium 2007/08/30 10:32:06-4:00 GMT Firewall UDP 192.168.164.1508
192.168.1.254.53

Direction Action Taken Source DNS Destination
Outgoing Blocked OEM COMPUTER 2.in-addr.arpa

I got 3 of these and similar Zone Alarm Blocks. What does this mean? What is
this *2.in-addr.arpa*?

After I got these, I tried to update the Spybot and Ad-Aware, I was unable
to access the sites. It said that I could not access them. Then the computer
froze up. I then ran my Avast!, without the computer being connected to the
Internet. Nothing showed up in Avast! I then shut down the computer and
after about 15 minutes I cold booted it without connection to the internet.
Then after the complete loading, I plugged in the DSL. I was then able to go
to the Ad-Aware and the Spybot site without any trouble. Any ideas?

This did not come out right. I will make corrections in line.

Glee,
I would also like to know if or what trouble this could cause me? Is
someone trying to get information from my computer? I read the articles or I
should say scanned them.

Yes Glee, I read it. When I tried to add it to the trusted zone, a box came
up . It said to fill in a description of this item. What do I put in as a
description? The IP address was already filled in. (Destination address).

I have no idea how to add something to the Trusted zone of Zone Alarm, if that is
where you are referring. I do not like or use Zone Alarm.

I suspect if it is asking for a "description" that you can put in anything that
describes it to your satisfaction. Have you considered asking this at the ZoneLabs
forums I linked, since those are the folks that could answer your questions?

Glee,
Thanks and I will try to ask in the forums if I can find out how to do
it. At least I know now that it may just be a glitch in ZA. I have ZA
6.1.744.001. What do you use for a firewall besides the Router as I
understand has a firewall built in. I use ATT DSL. Modem w/ router. It is a
*2wire*. As I understand it, because it is always on even if my computer
isn't the DSL may have started before the ZA, even though I have ZA to start
when the computer starts up. I have both ZA and the Msconfig set that way.
According to ZA, that is why I get these alerts.
Thanks again,
Angel

I use a NAT router with cable Internet. In WinXP, I use the native XP firewall. In
Win98SE, I do not use a software firewall. I used to use Kerio 2.1.5 with Win98SE,
on my old computer, but did not install any firewall when I put this box together a
couple of years ago.

The native XP firewall is an incoming firewall. Your NAT-router is
performing the same function, which means the XP firewall is taking up
system resources and is performing no useful function.

Yes - win-98 doesn't need to be running firewall software, especially
since you have a NAT-router.

I did some research a while back and connected directly to the Internet and
had Zone Alarm Professional alert me when there were port scan attempts. I
would say and not to be biased but the majority of port scan attempts did
come from China. I am just a citizen of the USA who just tries to say it as
he sees it and is not willing to play games with people. The other port
scans came from the USA and a few from Russia as well. I got this
information confirmed by a military buddy that China indeed is the one
responsible for many port scans. Heck, China may have even hacked the
Pentagon email recently according to msn.msnbc.com if you read the news there
that I enjoy. Anyway, if you do not want to worry about it then do what Glen
and 98 Guy and I do as well nowadays and that is use a router with NAT
technology to block a majority of port scans at the hardware level. 98 Guy
helped me to see the light on this that the majority of port scans you block
at the hardware level is much better because you don't have port scans
turning off the hardware yet. If you want to be really safe then have an
extra old PC like I do 0000 in my case a 486 that is not connected to the
internet.

Hi,
The problem is: If I keep the modem plugged in when I first start the
computer, I get the message that my computer was blocked. I then have
problems with updates from Avast!, Ad-Aware and Spybot. If I unplug when I
shut down in the evening, and wait until all is loaded when I turn on the
computer, then plug in the modem, I do not have the problem. I don't want to
keep unplugging the modem. Right now, I do not have the ZA in start up. I
want to wait until I find out a solution to the problem with ZA. I have the
older ZA because the newer one does not work with 98SE.
If any one can come up with a solution, it would be fully appreciated.

Hi,
P.S. The version: Zone Alarm 6.1.744 The free one.

That was the same version I used in my security testing except it was Zone
Alarm Professional. Angel, do you connect via ethernet wire through a NAT
router that blocks port scans at the hardware level? This is an extremely
important first line of defense. The grc website --- just google it --- can
scan and see if your first 1024 ports are in stealth mode. A software
firewall should only be a secondary line of defense. My current favorite
antivirus software is AVG antivirus because it does not have all the issues
that Avast had for me. You can download it from the majorgeeks website ---
google it and be careful not to click on an add --- vary your download
location for security reasons. Furthermore, I like SpywareBlaster as well to
help protect you from baddies entering into your system. In addition, Spybot
Search and Destroy is useful. The problem I had with Adaware and the reason
my dad, Ivan and I do not use it is because it had too many false positives
and messed up my sister's computer, Kate in the past. Hope this helps a bit
and have a nice day! You may want to start removing stuff but your first
line of defense is having a secure offense --- I am talking about removing
your net connection --- ASAP and then begin to remove programs and let us
start with the biggie of Zone Alarm. If you are not connected to the NET
then any baddies cannot send their information home at least for now. Let me
know how it goes and you may want to boot into safe mode to start removing
programs. I know this is probably too much information but bear with me
since I have always been long-winded and am not precise like some of the
MVP's such as Gary S. Terhune, Chris Quirke, Ron, Alan Edwards, etc.

Thanks Curt,
What is this *grc* about? when I looked at it, it mentions XP. I did
not see anything pertaining to 98SE. Maybe I missed something.
