using an external hard drive to update win 10 on a low memory device

I have downloaded the win 10 media installation tool on a 500GB external hard drive. I run the tool, accept the terms and then the message comes up that there is no space on the c drive , with no options to use the external hard drive for this exact reason.

Thie has been endlessly frustrating process. I cant clear any space on the c drive...

What do I do to use the 500GB external hard drive??
