6 of 11 updates just won't install

Q

Qu0ll

I received notification that there were 11 new updates so I installed them.
The machine was rebooted but instead of bringing up the login prompt it said
it was configuring the updates and then rebooted itself. When the machine
then booted for the second time I logged in only to find that 6 of the
updates were "available" again and had obviously not installed. So I went
through the whole process again and once again after 2 complete reboots
there are still 6 updates waiting to be installed.

How do I install these updates?

Same here. On 3 of my PCs with Vista. Glad to know others are having
it. I was worried it was a Windows Genuine issue even though my
copies are legit.

6 of the updates were only classified as important . 5 critical.
Your settings in update is set to only install critical updates.
In Windows Update change the settings to install all updates (if that is
what you wish to do)

No, that's not it at all. I have configured update to install all important
updates and the update history clearly shows that the 6 updates in question
have failed to install - repeatedly.

First step is to see why they failed.

What does it say in Windows Update?

Windows Update just says that they failed to install but this is from the
event log:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x800f0826: Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB933928).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x800f0826: Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB935280).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x80070002: Security Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems
(KB935807).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x800f0826: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0
(KB929916).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x800f0826: Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter for x64-based
Systems [July 2007] (KB905866).
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x800f0826: Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB936357).

So there seems to be a couple of reasons. Any ideas?

Same problem here. Obviously MS screwed this one up. I got most of the
updates to install by installing them one at a time and rebooting each
time. But 935807 won't install.

Yes, check what the error codes mean.

Try disabling your anti-virus prog...?

I found that disabling all Bitdefender 10's modules (AV, firewall,
antispam etc.) got the updates to install.

YMMV

What preparation did you do for the updates or did you just let Vista do
its thing without any preparation or disabling your anti virus auto scan?

You might try the following. It helped me.

Open the command prompt as administrator
then enter this command and reboot afterwards:
fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\

Hope this helps you too.

0x800f0826 CBS_E_PENDING_VICTIM Package failed to install because another
pended package failed.

What's non-standard about your system?
The CBS.log ( %systemroot%\logs\cbs\cbs.log ) may have some additional data
here, but can be hard to read if you're new to it since it's meant for
consumption by software developers as opposed to the average user.

Well Herby I tried that and did not help me, I am stuck with KB933928 and it
apparently needs to configure longer than it takes to plot a trajectory to
the moon. Each of the others in the latest list did install when I tried them
one at a time. 928 configured from 8 this morning till 4 this PM and still
not done, so I restarted and if you check windows update really quick after
restart it looks like it worked but the uh oh comes a few minutes later when
you look at the update history.

Exactly what am I looking for? I searched for the strings "error" and "not
found" but there's none of them. I tried to look for any obvious errors but
it's difficult to see anything in all that text.

Then let's step back and isolate:
* Reboot if you haven't already (to flush any pending transactions)
* Install each update one by one.
Given that only one seemed to fail and the others ones were seemingly
victims of the failure of the failure of KB935807 to install, can you get
the others to install if you save that until last?

This just makes your diagnosis that much simpler, of course.

Yes, it's just KB935807 that won't install even after repeated attempts and
many, many reboots with and without virus scanning turned on.

I had the same prob with KB933928, I downloaded it separately by searching
for it and then installed it myself without using windows update. It worked
and shows up in History as successful. Unfortunately update still wants me
to install it, so I have opted out of auto update.
