Just want to state here and now that I have NEVER liked or trusted Crap
Cleaner and so far, nothing new has come out to change my mind. I
frankly think it could be dangerous in the wrong hands (hmmm, the
Initials H and W come to mind.....bwa ha ha!!)
But that is just my opinion and yes, I have tried it out twice and don't
trust it. Period!!

The KB*.log files are the log files created when installing the hotfix
with that KB number. These log files are mainly used to establish why a
particular hotfix or patch did not install correctly.

Let me re-word that and hopefully this time make more sense. The KB log
files are used IF the hotfix or patch with the same number did not install
correctly as they should contain information allowing the user to
establish the cause of the problem including error codes, etc.

I haven't had any problem with it on dozens of machines and I use both
the registry issues and the clean up. I do make sure that I only use
Crap Cleaner for cleaning after a fresh boot up, though.

a.. Click Start.
b.. Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup.
c.. Disk cleanup will calculate the free space on your computer, which may take a few minutes.
d.. After the calculation is complete, confirm that only the following checkboxes are checked:
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
e.. Click OK and Yes when prompted to delete files.
Disk cleanup will delete the files and close automatically when finished.
Defrag the drive
Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter. Have it defragment your local disk.
As others have had issues with CCleaner, this is the best way to clean one's system and it doesn't involve installing third party software that pushes the Yahoo Toolbar and includes tools such as a registry cleaner that can seriously harm one's system, IMHO.

Why, thank you, KB......that is EXACTLY the routine I follow every couple of days. Plus I go into Windows Explorer every night and clean out the TEMP folder, the Firefox one and also the Java one because it builds up fast.
As I said, I do NOT trust Crap Cleaner and while there is some basis in fact (on reading what it does and how), it is also what I call a "gut hunch" and I follow those more than anything else.

Hmm, closing eyes and going from cranial memory for a WinME system....
For WinME:
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools will take one to Disk Defragmenter (which might not successfully complete (hangs during the process) in Normal Mode and may need to be run in Safe Mode) and Disk Cleanup.

Most of us run XP on here, but it is our *home away from home*.....we do get the occasional WinME user, but Harry is the only one using it to my knowledge.
You forgot that other thingie with WinME, the one that escapes me as well. First you did *blank*, then you defragged.
Sigh.....the memory is the first thing to go!!

The built in clean up of XP does not do a thorough clean up, neither
does crap cleaner so I also use SystemSuite5 to clean up what crap
cleaner and XP haven't found.
Again, I have used it on dozens of computers with no adverse affects.
What "issues" are you talking about, the ones you read about on some

It was ScanDisk and may need to be run in safe mode as well. I've seen many proggies that have been recommended to run instead of the native one, but haven't found them effective on my system. YMMV, of course.

No, the native XP cleanup tool doesn't remove everything, but IMHO, it's good enough.

Now, to answer your question with a question, when you run CCleaner, which boxes do you check in the Applications as well as Windows tabs? Do you leave them all checked?
Having run the tool and directed others to use it with specific settings, I'm curious which you've used. The registry cleaner has caused problems, in my experience, often too late as users fail to save a backup of what's removed. I strongly dislike XP registry cleaners (they're not needed) and recommend that others avoid them especially if they don't create a backup.
I just don't like the risk involved along with the need to specifically direct users to not install the yahoo toolbar with it, and the need to configure it properly.
If you're happy with using it with no adjustments to the defaults, so be it. I've got no qualms with your choices.

For WinME:
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools will take one to Disk Defragmenter (which might not successfully complete (hangs during the process) in Normal Mode and may need to be run in Safe Mode) and Disk Cleanup.

As I said, I do NOT trust Crap Cleaner and while there is some basis in fact (on reading what it does and how), it is also what I call a "gut hunch" and I follow those more than anything else.

a.. Click Start.
b.. Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup.
c.. Disk cleanup will calculate the free space on your computer, which may take a few minutes.
d.. After the calculation is complete, confirm that only the following checkboxes are checked:
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
e.. Click OK and Yes when prompted to delete files.
Disk cleanup will delete the files and close automatically when finished.
Defrag the drive for XP
Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter. Have it defragment your local disk.
As others have had issues with CCleaner, this is the best way to clean one's system and it doesn't involve installing third party software that pushes the Yahoo Toolbar and includes tools such as a registry cleaner that can seriously harm one's system, IMHO.
