Speaking of security, I find it amusing that everything nowadays seems to be
done in the name of security. You don't think a George Orwell 1984 is around
the corner do you?

Well then you've really witnessed the "changes" even more than I have!

B

Bill Watt

Not really.... :)
But if you know an amateur radio call sign you can get all kinds of
personal information thru the ARRL and FCC. Name, age, address to
name some. It's much worse than providing a valid e-mail address in
a public forum.

Wow, this seems to have degenerated into a "who is the oldest fogey" on this
board.

Well, here is 'ole Bobster's entry:

Born 1930, married 1950, both of us still going strong, terrorizing the
countryside in our vintage Porsche Carrera Targa. Life is sweet!

And BTW Bill, antenna design is a very highly developed science based on
solid electromagnetic theory and principles. Those who see it only as an
art are usually tinkerers or hams who don't have the educational background
to understand and apply the fundamentals of the theory.

Oh well couple of days late responding.

Just curious Bill,I was about to undertake a EE, and got married instead.
Obviously long-range plans aren't my forte. Just kidding, I have the utmost
respect and admiration for women.

What was your main area of discipline? I used to be quite a ham operator,
and RF still fascinates the heck out of me

You can read *all* the books you want, author them even, but antenna theory
has far too many variables to ever relegate it to a science, it will always
be any art, unless you start talking Very High Powered Microwaves, and even
then you better not has the slightest burr on the inside of the
waveguide<OMIGOSH>.

Where is you level of expertise in??

Never was a ham operator. I used to get on the CB a lot of evenings after
work. I enjoyed doing so. I have not done that for a long time. The brackets
let loose and my antenna dropped through the roof.. Had to have the hole in
the roof repaired. I still have the CB and wire. What a change! Now I get on
the computer. <G>

Right on.

In 1978, in addition to the various ham antennas on a 50 ft rotating
tower, I built a home brew Weather Satellite tracking ground station
and tracked and downloaded live pictures of the earth from 9
orbiting satellites including 3 Russian. For the so called
stationary satellites I made a dish from a TV one. The feed horn
extended on a PVC pipe and was a 2 lb coffee can. The antenna inside
the can was a wire 1 1/2 inches long. It worked well at the 5 watt
transmitted frequency of 1.6 Ghz.

The highlight of the hobby was discovering a secret Russian
satellite and getting written up in Aviation Week and Space
Technology magazine for it.

I am not an antenna expert but I had fun with them.

As long as the subject has been discussed here I thought this may be
interesting.

Well, yes and no. I think there's a bit more to it than that, if you look
a the world critically and carefully, and really care about the societal
(not technological) changes affecting so many of us today.

From what I've seen of many of these changes in society over the past 5+
decades, I'm just not too impressed - with the major exception of race
relations, of course.

But as for ... personal responsibility, and personal accountability,
nowadays? And perseverance (not just sound bites)? And the plethora of
single parent homes today, and the increasing breakup of the family unit?
Ummm, count me out of "how great it is these days" (sociologically
speaking).

Hi, Angel. 1930 was a good year! My wife of 57 years was also born in '30.

Hi, this is a P.S.,
I just read the bobster's entry. We were born the same year!

Good for you, Bill Watt. Sounds like your satellite tracking antenna worked
just fine.

I didn't mean to put down hams. There are many good engineers working in
the aerospace and communications industries who are hams. Many good antenna
designs are arrived at by cut-and-try or by using well established handbook
formulas. The going gets tough when the antenna requirements specify highly
controlled beams with very low sidelobes, steerable phased arrays,
self-adapting arrays, etc. Agencies like NASA, NSC, have very special
antenna needs that can often only be met by application of sophisticated
electromagnetic design principles. Fortunately, much of this can now be
done by using readily available digital design software. The devil is in
the details of knowing how to apply the software.

Keep on hammin'

Regards,

Bill Watt
