Admin Security

I'm really in a bind. I am the owner and our company is on a Wan. I
suspect my network administrator of inappropriate activity and
unathorized internet usage. I over heard this chap speaking on the
phone that he'd 'finish up the web site today and work on additional
projects in the days ahead'. We don't do web sites, have none, and it
appears he's taking advantage of his trusted position.

I would want to monitor this fellow's activities, stealth. If that's
possible. Than I got thinking -he brings in a laptop to work -stand
alone - and is thus free from working of the PDC BDC Citrx Term
servers. He administers security, runs the Wan, and is generally
expected to work his paid hours for this company. That appears to the
contrary as he's taking on 'independent' projects.

I ran a simple progran on the servers to look at internet history and
there is nothing. Thus my conclusion it the laptop he brings in -and
takes home.

If there's any solution to this very delicate matter it would be
helpful.
Thanks

I realize you may be afraid he is going to do something to your
data/network - but you have to discuss this with him.

Do you have a policy that states he cannot work outside of your business? I
mean - after all - just because he is doing side projects does not mean he
is not giving you the time you pay him for as well. And the only proper way
of finding out is to ask.

Otherwise - you can spend money on independent auditors to come in and tell
you everything you are doing incorrectly.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

You may be seeking a technical solution to what is actually
a human factors / personnel issue.

Just because of the phone conversation it does not mean that
the work is happening in the office on your time. Most people's
clients do want to discuss their projects during business hours.
Perhaps you do have other events that lead you to your assumption.

Perhaps your IT needs are not large enough to keep him busy,
or are tasks going undone, at least not in a timely manner.

You might want to consider asking for him to provide you with
a weekly report of tasks completed, with times per, of prioritized
tasks needing completion, again with time estimates per, etc..
This change in the character of his job may in itself provide him
with cause to adjust if he is doing as you suspect.

The technical capabilities to monitor what is happening are
there if iit were not for the personal stand-alone, depending
on usage of internet connectivity etc. But it is not simple, and
given his stated roles you would likely need to be as stealthy
as he might be capable of being.

I would suggest that you find a non-technical approach unless
in fact there is more to it than the suspect event you mentioned.
If you are thinking you are best off with another, etc. then just
do it otherwise I would suggest a personal approach.
