Not my experience with VISTA Business RTM and now VISTA Ultimate retail.

But I was careful. I started with PM8.01 on an XP installation on it's own hard
drive. Then I partitioned an second empty hard drive using PM8 into two equal
partitions and installed VISTA on one of those partitions using boot to the DVD
to do this.

I ahve no intention of using PM8 to alter the VISTA drive although I have used
it to look at all the partitions on the several PC drives.

I recall that was an option? I don't use it as it doesn't work at all
for me, it simple says I have a corrupt partition table and has done so
since before PM 8, I use Partition Commander and it does have the don't
format option.

BTW, the "corrupt partition table" works flawlessly with Windows 2k, XP
and Vista. I can boot on any of the above three CDs, tell it to
fixboot, fixmbr and get a completed successfully message, then boot PM
and get a "Corrupt Partition Table" message.

Yes...I do..
If you install Vista as the second dual boot os...if you load PM8 in XP post vista you may see this dialog box since PM8 will not be able to interpret Vista's ntfs offset.
Partition Magic has detected error xxx on the partition starting at sector xxxx on disk x.
The length of the partition in the partition table is incorrect.
Would you like Partition Magic to fix this error ?

- Choose NO.

This may occur even if the Vista drive is hidden. Additionally the drives or partitions after the Vista partition may not be visible to to PM and show up(only in PM8/8.01) as bad. If so and you wish to managed them use XP or Vista's Disk Management tool.

Is this not to do with the fact the Vista has a new start up sequence called
BCD (database) that will not work with previous versions of Windows that use
a Boot Manager.

You cannot in fact mix and match XP with Vista unless you partition, have
two HDs or VirtualPC. This link explains.
