Problem with missing config\system

Have an old Compaq with XP Professional software. It displayed: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\windows2\system32\config\system. Tried to solve the problem by using an SP3 disk but when pressing a key when it asks to press one, the screen goes blank. . Have to emphasize that it is \windows2\ which I don't know if it makes a difference.

Any suggestions?
