A good report to read (and send to all members of your family, friends
and colleagues!) may be found here:-

http://www.stopbadware.org/

The short report is a plain-English explanation of badware threats to
user privacy and security, based on research over the past year. It
explains online security issues such as compromised websites, social
networking scams, and other badware trends that pose significant risk
to the average internet user.

Quote:

"StopBadware's mission is to help educate consumers and average
internet users about badware, and to help the community fight back. We
hope that "Trends in Badware 2007" can help clear the fog around
online dangers and empower ordinary internet users to take charge of
their computers' security."

I hope you find this item helpful. :)

Hi Dave,

When you made this same post three days ago, nobody replied. Maybe the
lack of response should be telling you something? I don't mean to be
unfriendly, but what is the point of making a repeat of the same post, which
attracted no reply, three days later?

Best Wishes,

Peter

Hi Peter

Intrigued by your resonse, I investigated further.

Might you by any chance have been using this facility?
http://windowsbb.com/forumdisplay.php?f=28

FYI, I had never been there before.

I posted my first message in 'microsoft.public.security.homeusers' and the
second message in 'microsoft.public.security.virus'.

Two separate newsgroups, albeit on similar subjects. I had no idea that the
forum at the link above might amalgamate the them.

I'd appreciate a response from you. TIA

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply.

I had not been using the facility:
http://windowsbb.com/forumdisplay.php?f=28
Like you, I had not used that site before.

I was not aware that you had posted your first message on this subject,
http://www.stopbadware.org/
in a different newsgroup, namely 'microsoft.public.security.homeusers'.
I understand, thus, that you were not repeating a previous message in this
newsgroup, 'Microsoft.public.security.virus'.

I apologise for my critical comments in my earlier message.

Best Wishes,

Peter Selig

No worries, Peter - in fact, thank you for your reply.:)

May I enquire which facility you *did* use which also, apparently,
amalgamated the two groups on your machine? TIA

Out of interest, did you actually read the report to which I referred?

Dave

Hi Dave,

I was not using any web-based interface to read/reply to your message.

I was using Outlook Express' newsreader, under WIN XP Prof. SP2, to view the
newsgroup:
'microsoft.public.security.virus'.

I will say that I had not subscribed to the
'microsoft.public.security.homeusers' newsgroup before seeing your message
of 7 December, beginning

"Hi Peter

Intrigued by your resonse, I investigated further."

After that reply of yours to my message, I subscribed to the
'microsoft.public.security.homeusers' newsgroup. I immediately saw, in
that newsgroup, your earlier message dated 3 December, with the subject:

"What Internet users need to know".

This confirmed to me what you explained about your having posted that
message in the 'microsoft.public.security.homeusers' newsgroup.

Also, I have skimmed through the report to which you referred. I intend to
read it fully later, when time permits. It looks like it provides a good
'plain-English' explanation of various types of malware-infection processes.
Thanks for this reference!

Best Wishes,

Peter
