Transformation of files

[webster72n]

At one time or another some data files in my documents folder were
'converted' from their 'original' status to individual JPEG and GIF images
and JScript Files, which I would have to 'find an association for'.
I am using FoxitReader and AdobeAcrobat 6 interchangeably, could that have
caused it?
If so, (or if not), what (other) remedy is there?
Hoping for a miracle...

question.

On one web page ( http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php ), it states
that "Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer and printer."

OK, I like the "free" part <g>. But then, the same page has a "Price" link
which goes to an order page, where it states that 1 copy costs $35.10.

So is Foxit Reader freeware or shareware?

Mike: Thanks for the clarification. It was late when I posted and I should
have taken more time to examine the Foxit site and license agreement before
posting.

Harry: I'm sorry that no one has been able to help you with your problem.
However, I wanted to thank you for bringing Foxit Reader to my attention. It
seems to perform much quicker on my PC and seems noticeably less bloated
that Adobe's Acrobat Reader.

That's the idea behind it, O.J.
I know of FoxitReader through Mike's recommendation, therefore the credit
belongs to him alone. My problem is negligible, but a solution would be
appreciated.

I'm unclear as to what the problem is. You mentioned data files but I
have no idea what format these files are or were. Are you saying that
they were PDF files and that these have now been broken down into their
component parts or are you perhaps referring to saved web pages where they
have been saved as an html file and a folder containing the various file
components on the web page? If the latter then just viewing the html file
will rebuild the page as originally displayed using the various files in
the associated folder. These html files and associated folders are
generated when you use File | Save As when viewing a page in Internet
Explorer and choose to save as type "Webpage complete" rather than "Web
Archive" which generates a single file with an mht extension.

In all likelihood it is the latter, but when I view the files they are GIF,
JPEG and JScript files with corresponding icons, not html, and I am asked to
find an association for them.
Originally they were 'saved as' from the web. All other, more important
files are mostly pdf and intact. I am trying to fully understand what you
are saying about mht extension.
Did I by any chance make the wrong choice in choosing the type?

In which case go up a level in Windows Explorer and use the html file in
the folder above rather than looking at the contents of the folder of the
same name. The html file and the folder wil have identical or at least
similar names. The only files worth viewing by themselves wil be graphics
files such as those with a GIF, MBP, TIF or JPEG extension. If not
already associated with Win Me's viewer then either do so or with IE
although I prefer to use the viewer as it allows me to resize images when
viewing.

Your choice entirely and which you choose depends to a degree on what you
want to do with the saved page. Saving as an archive (mht file type) is
probably best unless you think that at some subsequent date you might want
to use a component of the saved page, such as a gif file, elsewhere.

Maybe my description was a bit misleading, Mike, they are actually not GIF
oor JPEG files, but mere images and when I try to open them with the viewer,
it cannot read them.
Some of them open directly as small, individual images and the ones that
don't, I am asked to find an association for. Does that make any sense to
you?

Not really, but I haven't been following your problem with any great
degree of urgency.

BUT....do these "image files" have an extension when looking at them in
Windows Explorer?? Such as *.jpg or *.gif. You have referred to them
as such and I just wanted to clear that up.

Don't zink sooh, they 'are the contents' (extensions?) of a 'yellow folder'
and mere images, i.e. gif, jpeg and jscript, which shows up when highlighted
with a right click of the mouse (I have my OM set to enable this feature).
And that 'yellow folder' (referring to the icon) used to be an internet file
when it was intact.
Had no idea whatsoever, that you also go by the name of 'Mike'. <vbg>

And it _still_ is intact and exactly as you saved it, what may have
happened is that you might have deleted the parent html file in the folder
above the folder containing the files from the web page.. Nothing has
changed. As I have already stated if you choose to save a web page out of
Internet Explorer and choose to save as type "web page complete" you will
always get exactly what you are seeing now. If you don't believe me why
not save another and check.

Mike, it isn't disbelief, I simply didn't understand, until now, maybe.
For the future I will have to take a closer look while 'saving'.
It still seems to me that the current file has changed along the way, but I
could also be mistaken. I'm sure you are correct, but is there a way to make
this right?

I am sure I didn't delete them (there are several) myself with the purpose
of deleting them, it must have happened in the process of another program,
hence my assumption of interaction between 'Readers'. You had asked me 'to
go up one level' in Windows Explorer, what exactly does it mean? I tried
some things, but none of them worked, even the viewer can't read the files
in question, only Presentations(*.,ppt*,.pps*,.pot).
Hopefully you didn't give up on this yet. <H>.

I meant you to look in the folder containing the folder with the various
image files. For example if the images are in a folder named
"harrys_webpage" and this folder is in a second folder named "savedsites"
look in the folder "savedsites" for an html file named
"harrys_webpage.htm". Opening this in your browser would then display the
saved web page using the contents of the folder "harrys_webpage".

Ah, that's were I can't comply, Mike, those files all have '_files'
following their original name and only show the images of the various files
as containment.
I'm simply unable to find the 'stuff' you describe, i.e. 'saved sites' and
'html file named'.
Apparently 'harry's_webpage' has turned into 'harry's_files'.
Doesn't look too good, does it?

Oh boy, Mike, this is utterly emberassing:
These files constitute a 'duplicate'. When I look down the line, I find
every single one as an internet file still present and 'fully intact'.
The cause of that duplication is unbeknown to me.
I am very sorry for this to have happened and apologize to you and everyone,
having read this thread. Can you make this go away???
