Extending Displays

Good morning,I am an adjunct instructor who typically lectures with a PowerPoint presentation. The trouble is, is that at my university the lectern computers I'm using won't operate in Presenter View. The computer monitor and projector screen are duplicated such that both show either the slides with my lecture notes or the slides alone. I have tried extending the display to no avail and the computer appears to not even detect the projector/screen as another monitor when I use the Detect function. How do I get beyond this in order to function in Presenter View?
