AVG Anti-Virus

Pete138

After updating AVG Free the previous day it displays the following
message today: "AVG update downloader has stopped working"
I un-installed AVG and re-installed it again and the same happened
again.
Anybody got an idea how to correct this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe you should try AVAST. I have it working without problems on my system
(Vista Ultimate). On another Vista system I have AVG Free and haven't come
across the issue you reported.

Did you do a clean install of Vista or was it an upgrade? What antivirus
solution did you use previously?

AVG has been working fine for me. Did you download/install the latest
version?

PMSL! This is the exact advice Kevin was giving out when he was still
running vista before he got on his Server 2008 kick! I guess he
succeeded in teaching you something after all! LOL.

This was after "Updating" or were you installing from scratch?

Either way, uninstall AVG, delete the Grisoft folder from Program Files and
re-install using the latest version from http://free.grisoft.com

Might have to run As Administrator, though I installed AVS recently and had
no problems.

You could try Avast too, I've heard it's pretty good.

there was a MAJOR update recently released.
you might want to try downloading a new copy and give it a try.

Avast is the best on the Net. It runs rings around the paid for ones like
Norton, etc.
I was using it for a few years on XP put vista and Avast on another comp,
total compatibility.

I'd have to disagree, when AVG released their Vista compatible free
version Avast was gone in an INSTANT! replaced with AVG.

Everything runs rings around Norton, McAfee, etc but there are very
good paid for AVs.

I'd be interested in reading your views on why you thing AVG is better
than Avast!

Ditto, I just clicked on Update again and it worked fine, said there
were no updates. Since I'd just updated I expected that...

Since both detect viruses neither is "better" but I very much dislike
the Avast interface.

My views are that AVG UI is much more user friendly, and AVG also does
not announce to me through my speakers that it has new updates available
(how annoying!) amongst other things.

Here is a comparison of the AV suites, and other stuff.

Funny. The products all look the same from your comparison :)

OK, thanks. I'm not crazy about the interface either, but on the other
hand, I hardly ever need to look at it most of what it does it does
in the background. I'm happy with Avast! here.

By the way, I don't really agree with the statement "Since both detect
viruses neither is 'better.' " Even though they both detect viruses,
one could still be better than the other:

1. It could detect more viruses than the other.

2. It could have its virus definitions updated more frequently.

3. It could have other features that make it easier to use.

One of the things I very much like about Avast! is that it updates it
definition automatically and often--sometimes several times a day.
Does AVG match that?

Another very nice feature of Avast! is that you can set it to
automatically do a complete virus scan whenever the screen saver comes
on. I do that, and don't have to worry about running manual, or even
scheduled, scans.
