Dapper Dan

The recent thread on the CCleaner update prompted me to look at this utility
again. It has been several years but I seem to recall one of the experts
(Alias or Heirloom??) issuing a caution to use only the CLEANER component
and nothing else.

I have just looked at the utility and it appears to have some interesting
tools. Has anything changed over the years to make this utility safer?

The risky part is the registry cleaner, as with ALL registry cleaners.

The rest, IMO, is totally safe, useful and usable.

't'weren't me that issued the caution, and, I am NO expert! I did, however,
state that I use the reg cleaner portion of this app for specific
cleanups...just because I find it easier than doing manual cleaning when I
wish to dispose of, for example, all things Norton after dumping the app.
As Zee stated, the reg cleaner can be risky, especially, if left to its' own
devices. I would never allow any 'auto' cleaning, I heavily scrutinize the
items found and ALWAYS make a backup of anything removed. As a result, I
have never had any problem with CC or what it does. I like it.

Thanks 'loom.

I used the utility last evening. I had just manually deleted all things
temp at least I thought I had.

I used Disk Cleanup in System Tools, then deleted TIF, rebooted and deleted
%temp% via the run command. I then ran the "cleaner" component of CCleaner,
excluding Cookies, and it found an additional 44 MB of junk. I didn't pay
much attention as to where the junk was located but I'm curious for the
future because I thought I was clearing all the junk in my weekly
maintenance schedule.

I'll play with it over the next week or so and see how much more of the
utility I can use. Could be very interesting!

Dan,

Just adding on:

After the cleanup you can see the "Details of files deleted".

You can even save the details to a text file (Right-click and save).

You can also use Options > Cookies and select the "Cookies to keep".

After selecting these you can safely delete all cookies, because CCleaner
will keep the ones you want.

Something I missed that is a must on WinME:

ALWAYS, and I do mean ALWAYS, reboot after the cleanup or it may mess up
System Restore!

Thanks Zee......I was just getting on to mention that!!! Hope Dan got it in
time. Another item I thought about after I saw Cookies mentioned.....is the
index.dat file setting. If you have Cookies unchecked and the Index.dat
files set to remove, it will remove the /index.dat/ file from the Cookies
folder, effectively rendering them unuseable!! If you have specific
websites, i.e. Weather, customized to certain areas, you will lose this
customization when the Cookies index.dat file is removed at next boot. I
have looked for a way to keep the Cookie index.dat and remove the others,
like from History, Temp Internet, etc........but, no luck yet. Haven't
really looked that hard :).

Actually I did reboot, not because I knew I had to, but rather because I
usually do my maintenance in a "tricked" CLEAN BOOT environment (mvp Gary S
Terhune recommendation way back in the days of 98SE). Hmm, I'm just
thinking, I went in there again this morning and saved whatever cookies I
thought I needed and then reinserted the checkmark in COOKIES and ran it one
more time but this time I did not reboot.

If there's a chance that it messes up SR, should I flush it and start anew?

I have had no problems with deleting the (in)famous index.dat file and
keeping the cookies I want to.

And if you enjoy your privacy deleting "index.dat" is a must.

But, then... maybe it's me being paranoid..??

If you're not having registry issues, best to leave the Issues feature
alone. As another poster pointed out, you can configure it to not nuke
cookies you want to keep for log on purposes, etc.

I totally agree about the importance of the index.dat deletion. I could
give it another shot, but, it is such a pain in the butt to re-establish all
of my custom cookies if the index.dat is gone. I am running XP, could that
make a difference?? I will submit that my cookies do remain, but, they are
no longer recognized by IE....maybe you are using a different browser??

But I do NOT clean "Autocomplete form history" (Cleaner section > Windows
tab > Internet Explorer > UNtick).

That may be the reason for your "issues" with IE.

I also UNtick "Saved form information" in Applications tab >
Firefox/Mozilla.

Those are my settings/preferences, tested and working fine for me.

Of course, other users may not like them.

That is how mine is set up. Only difference is that I have the index.dat
unchecked because of the cookie issue and I don't let it 'empty' my Recycle
Bin (I'll do that myself, thank you). I can't imagine why my cookies are
unrecognizable after cleaning the index.dat files. It is my understanding
that the file is re-created after every deletion, one would think it would
see the remaining cookies, since they are still in the appropriate
folder(s).
