Global catalog

Ozgur Yapici

Hello,
I have a Windows 2003 domain controller without Service Pack installed and
another Windows 2003 domain controller with Service Pack 2. Global Catalog
service running on first server and I intend to assign Global Catalog
responsibility to second domain controller. Is this service pack difference
cause a problem during Global Catalog creation or later use ?

Cheers

You should have the GC on both servers for fault tolerance as recommended by
MS. No issue I am aware of with the GC and service packs.

I haven't seen any problems with the service pack -- or running servers with
the different service packs in the same environment -- and the GC. I would
agree that if you only have the two servers, that it would probably make
sence to have both of them act as GCs, just ignore the events you'll see
regarding the infrastructure master.

If these are two DCs in a much larger structure, you'll want to stick with
the structure and standards you have established and evaluate the placement
as you upgrade your service packs across the board.

Hope this helps.
