mysterious file E--APPRO.PRI

I have discovered this mysterious file on my HD:

Name: E--APPRO.PRI
Size: 0 bytes
Created: 05 March 2040 14:33:01
Modified: 04 November 2037 13:35:10
Accessed: 23 February 2008

Its Attributes are ReadOnly and Archive and I cannot change them (error
message "Unable to set the attributes for ...")
Since the attributes are unchanging, it appears in every incremental
backup I make using WinZip. I do not have any LocoScript software (Web
search reveals .PRI as a file extension used by LocoScript).

As far as I know it's not doing any harm but I'd like to know what it
is, what created it, whether I can get rid of it.

It's in a folder 4 levels down from the root E: and containing no other
files. FAT32 partition (E:, not C:) using Win98SE.
(P.S. I believe my PC is free of viruses and spyware).

Any ideas?

either of those are.)

Looks like some Terminator(s) from the years 2040 & 2037 have been
nosing around your machine for the advanced technology! It is another
reason never to switch to XP or Vista! (You'd think that Schwarzenegger
would be too busy governating-- but it could be a new one from the TV
series or thanatoid!)

(1) "START button, Run, ScanDisk, Advanced button"
(2) Under "Check files for", ensure "Invalid dates & times" is checked.

This should fix the file. Try running just a Standard, but, if
necessary, make it a Thorough. Ensure you have selected drive E:\ for
the scan.

Now-- try again. Can you uncheck Read-Only & delete the file?

Maybe you have a damaged filesystem. Could it be that "E--APPRO.PRI"
is the remnant of a broken long filename? For example, could
"APPRO.PRI" have been part of the word "appropriate" or
"appropriation" ???

A .pri file is a file extension for Poly-Raster Image format which holds
descriptive headers and device bitmaps for converting image file formats. If you
look up Poly-Raster Image you will find descriptive information that will explain
what it is and why?

Prisms appears to be associated with Xnview which is an image file converter and
LocoScript I believe is used for mainly printers image converting.

OK, done that for Standard. It made the date/time valid and I still
can't change the attributes.
The scan also found some invalid dates for a dozen other files (entirely
unrelated folders on the same partition.
I haven't got the time tonight to do a thorough scan. It's a 6 GB
partition. The drive is a Maxtor 6L020J1 (20 GB, bought new in 2001)

No, can't uncheck read-only.

Raw reallocated sector count 0

(equiv to 8 hours mean duration of power-up or woken-up periods and 15
hours per powered-up period)

It won't hurt to do a Thorough scan, but the Standard was sufficient it
seems to fix the dates. Thanks for that feedback. Too bad that wasn't
the cure for the inability to change its attributes. But ensure the
Thorough scan does not constantly restart. If it does, cancel it & post
back for a cure.

Have you tried it in DOS. Try it first in Windows DOS (in a box). If
that fails, you must boot to True DOS & do it there...

Thanks. He's said he hasn't got LocoScript, but maybe he's got XnView
then. Anyway, his virus detector hasn't made a peep about it. I wonder
what those dates are about!

Goobernating? Of the Andy Griffith show? No! This is a lot worse! I'm

OK, thanks for the suggestions. "Done that", didn't work - neither DOS
box under Windows nor with DOS (Win98 rescue disk) booted from Floppy.
Here's what it looked like in the DOS box (and the pure Floppy DOS was
virtually identical, but the folder name "Computing" had to be the 8.3
name "Comput~1"):

(there are no other files in that folder despite its possibly
interesting name.)
"access denied" every time.
I imagine if I really want to be rid of this file I'll need to back up
the partition to another partition and/or CD, then reformat this
partition and copy back all files except this one. At present this file

Perhaps it is the _FOLDER_ that contains this file that is marked Read
Only. Look at the properties of the folders in Windows and see if any
in the path are marked "Read Only". You may also want to try the
DELTREE command from DOS. I've seen it remove things nothing else
would touch.

It is good you knew how to try it off the floppy. I am perplexed it did
not work. You could try (as Dulak suggested) to investigate & change the
attributes of the folder...

ATTRIB -H -S -R -A E:\Computing\PC\Linux\Win-Ux

However, I had already done the investigation, & its attributes didn't
matter on my test file. OTOH...

DELTREE E:\Comput~1\PC\Linux\Win-Ux

....is surely worth a try. If it works, it deletes the folder & all files
inside it, which is only one. Or, include the file name...

DELTREE E:\Comput~1\PC\Linux\Win-Ux\E--APPRO.PRI

....to get just the file. (But usually just DEL is used to delete a file
to avoid mishap.)

Maybe Linux or some other 3rd party app will be able to get it.

(a) Is it just E--APPRO.PRI that can't be accessed?
Or can it be the whole E:\partition is inaccessible?

(b) Do you ever create files with Linux, & are they
normally fully accessible to Windows & DOS?

All right. Those look like interesting apps. Even if Walter hasn't got
them, some other app that he does have may have made use of one of them.
And that could be the origin of the mystery file.
