The Color 'Red' is missing

If this is the wrong 'forum', please let me know and also where to turn.

Since I'm using WinME, I figured it would be worth a try:

In Properties/Settings under 'Colors' the color red is now completely
missing, while at first it sporadically changed back to 'normal' with all
colors present.
This makes the display appear greenish and the former blue purplish.
Otherwise no changes.
It seemed to coincide with the loss of my 'WinZip' (just a guess).
Does this indicate the monitor going bad'?
Or is the cause somewhere else?
If it can be fixed, please let me know.

Do you mean that you ONLY see these 'sporadically change' whilst using the
Properties/Settings utility window?

Or do you really mean that 'under normal conditions' i.e. when you are using
your PC (in Normal Mode), running any application, the red 'sporadically
changes' under all circumstances?

If the latter, then VERY unlikely to do with WinZip. But could be due to a
failing monitor (a gentle but firm thump of the monitor might show any
symptoms of dry joints) OR a failing Video Cable (Check the VGA cable ends
are secured correctly) or a failing/loose Video Card - Hey! haven't you just
been playing with your AGP - or whatever - Video Card very recently??

I meant those changes took place previously for a couple of weeks, with the
color being normal and changing over to missing red sporadically, or should
I say 'between each other'? Now the color red is missing permanently from my
color scheme. Doesn't that make it clear enough?
Lately I haven't touched anything but the on and off button of my
machinery'.

Everything in that regard was 'hypothetical'.
I also checked the Device Manager and everything 'is working properly'.
For the time being I will have to put up with this, until I find a way out.

OK Harry, after eliminating your red-herrings ('scuse the pun) then you're
back to my original practical troubleshooting suggestions :-

Does the colour change if you 'percussion test' (thump!) your monitor?
Have you tried substituting your monitor?

Did you confirm the security (tightness) of VGA cable connectors?
Can you try a spare VGA cable?

You might have to go 'under-the-hood' to check that out - although I'm still
not sure whether your video card is part of your motherboard. (Re: gotta
say.. so long ME)

Have you actually tried any of these troubleshooting tests Harry?

From this distance, it certainly sounds like a hardware issue with your
monitor being the favourite.

Monitors tend to die, after time. Especially the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
variety, including TV sets.

I had a ten-year-old Zenith monitor lost the blue gun.

I have a fifteen-year-old Zenith TV which is losing the red gun.

To sum it up, Mart, I haven't tried the 'thumping' or any of the other
interferences, since there is no reason for it to become loose.
When I started up now, everything is ok., but later on, mostly when I'm
connected with Yahoo or Google, it will happen again, I'm sure. Seems like
the green is missing in the color scheme too.
Happen to notice an ISP Installer - ISP6300 along the way. Is it legitimate,
or what? Cannot find specific connections to any of my programs.
My monitor going south is the most likely cause, but then it shouldn't be
going back to normal, as it did now, should it?
The model is an NEC MultiSync 3FGx.
It's still 'good' at the moment and I will hang in there, until I find a
solution.
Please dont be angry with me for not troubleshooting yet, Mart.
I may have to eventually and trying another monitor was my first thought.
But somehow things seem to point in another direction in my view.
Isn't there a way to manipulate the color scheme?

Harry,.......stop being a "wuss" and either do what Mart says or try a
different monitor. It will not get any better if you just ignore it.
And if you are not willing to take the advice of your betters on here,
then don't ask the questions. Capish??

Obviously your monitor is biting the dust and it is giving you warning
signals. So is Mart.....so am I. You are ignoring them all.

Usually a very good indicator.

Heat, dry joints, component aging, high temperatures, (very) high voltages,
heat, adjustable resistors (potentiometers) 'wiper contact' becomes
unreliable. dust, btw - did I mention heat?

Dunno Harry, sorry.

Intermittent faults are a sure sign of an impending failure - expensive or
inexpensive!

I guess that would make it some 8 or more years old

The operative word being 'moment'

Solution? - consider a TFT monitor. You can carry that forward to your next
PC when your WinMe box finally expires.

Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to open your monitor to play about within
it. There are some VERY dangerous voltages floating about under the casing.
Either get it fixed professionally or buy a new Flat Screen - you'll
probably find that the TFT is cheaper in the long run.

Harry, read my lips :-

Although your Red and Green guns (and perhaps the whole of your monitor) may
not have completely failed just yet (see also Norman's input regarding life
cycles) their associated circuitry would appear to be causing you 'problems'
which YOU should not even attempt to repair. The fact that (from here, it
appears that) your monitor is on its back with its feet in the air, is a
pretty good indication that it is almost deceased (as in "Dead Parrot")

You *may* get a few more days, weeks, or even months (of intermittent)
working life. You *may* also think that throwing money at it, might also
help as well as pratting about, but you can be assured that its (economic)
demise is imminent.

By all means be optimistic, but do also be prepared for the worst case.
Start saving now - it will be 'money in the bank' towards your next
PC/Monitor. Wishful feelings - sadly - don't always repair computers.

Bite the bullet, Harry, sooner rather than later. You'll wonder why you left
it so long!

All of what has been suggested to date is quite valid.......I would like to
add that I had a problem with my existing machine, similar to yours. My
screen would turn yellow. I determined it was not the monitor, very easily,
by simply turning the monitor on without the cpu and you should get some
sort of 'bouncing' message that the monitor has no signal, but, is working
properly (or something to that affect). If not, try just turning on the
monitor and opening your menu (usually a button in the front or side of the
monitor), if the colors are correct, then it is not your monitor! Mine was
either a loose video cable at the back of the cpu or the video card was
loose. When I 'wiggled' the connection the yellow went away and all was
normal and, to date, it has remained such. I still don't know whether it
was the cable connection or the seating of the video card.
Also, the video cable itself can cause similar problems. You would do well
to stick with Mart and Norman's suggestions.

Damn.....I just missed you. Went downstairs to either watch TV or get
creative. However, Ron was watching an X-rated Bruce Willis Die Hard
movie (Willis only seems to know one cuss word, grin) so I messed
around with my inventory, but couldn't seem to get inspired. Guess I
had better and then sell them to you for the girls, lol.

Elayne has her order(s) in, but I am missing one tiny item for each
necklace. Or a toggle or some such. Made a neat pearl trio (necklace,
earrings and bracelet) the other night. AFTER I had totally threaded
the 22" necklace, I then held it up for Ron to see and promptly let go
of one end of the wire.......ARGGHH!! You ever try to find tiny seed
pearls on a rug?? Somehow I can't picture you crawling around looking
for beads or pearls.....ROFL!! Got em all tho. (colour me cheap as
well as blonde)
