Forgot? No one remembers these lengthy numbers and letters.
It should be on the sleeve of your CD, pasted somewhere on your
computer, or on a sheet of paper with your documentation.

If Windows is still installed, then you can retrieve the key with one of
these free key finders:

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml - Key Finder
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html - Nirsoft Key Finder

IMPORTANT: If you have an OEM machine (Dell, HP, Sony, etc.) the Product
Key you retrieve with a key finder is not the correct one for
reinstallation. The key you find will be the one used by the OEM when
imaging the machines. You need to use the key on the sticker on your
computer.

If Windows is not still installed and you don't have an OEM machine with
a sticker, then you are SOL. Look around your house more carefully. You
also might try calling Microsoft Licensing Fulfillment Center Toll Free

What do you mean by "but it was missing?" Did you look on the back or
bottom of your computer for store bought PC, on the CD case that the
Original Windows XP Pro CD was shipped in or on the paper for the Enterprise
version of the program. If not included on any of these locations, I
suspect that you have purchased a pirated copy of the operating system.

I bet someone has (not me I hasten to add).
Can you imagine the mnemonic?

What is the make and model number of your PC? Is your version of XP
Professional OEM or retail? Full or upgrade?

Does your PC currently have Windows XP Professional installed on it?

Do you have an installation disk? Or is perhaps a recovery or restore
disk?

Do you have a Certificate of Authenticity? This would be either on a
sticker somewhere on your PC or on the envelope of your disk.

What is it you are trying to do? A clean install or a repair install?
And why? What specific problems are you experiencing?

If it was missing then you didn't forget it. If it's missing you need to
contact the seller.

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is not on the installation CD in any way, shape, or form.
It is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker that says
"Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory installed)
license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer affixed to the
exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc Advisor
from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the Product Key.
(If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and haven't since
reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably of the drive
image used at the factory and not your specific Product Key therefore,
it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not be -- used for a
re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KBen-us326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of
the Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.
