Rules of Conduct for this newsgroup

C

Carey Frisch [MVP]

Rules of conduct:

We hope that you find the time you spend in Microsoft's Community Web sites
to be useful and fun. To ensure that everyone has the best possible
experience, we've established a few guidelines. Please take a moment to read
them, and thank you for participating in a Microsoft Community.

Expectations of service:

Microsoft's Role: Microsoft does not offer formal support for the
communities you'll find here. Instead, our role is to provide a platform for
people who want to take advantage of the global community of Microsoft
customers and product experts. Microsoft may monitor content to ensure the
accuracy of the information you'll find, but any information provided by
Microsoft staff is offered "AS IS" with no warranties, and no rights are
conferred. You assume all risk for your use.

Microsoft MVPs: Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) volunteer
technical answers and expertise in many Microsoft Community Web sites.
Microsoft MVPs come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions. All
share a willingness to give their time, expertise, and advice to enhance the
technical skills of others. MVPs are not Microsoft employees and Microsoft
has no expectations of MVPs beyond the expectations of courtesy,
professionalism, and adherence to the Community rules that we ask of all
Microsoft community members. For more information on the MVP program and how
you can become an MVP, see http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/.

Rules of conduct:

Appropriate Language: The purpose of our communities is to exchange
technical information and expertise about Microsoft products. Please avoid
personal attacks, slurs, and profanity in your interactions.

Relevance to Topics: Please make sure that your postings in discussion
groups and chats are relevant to the subject at hand. It is normal for some
topics to drift from the stated subject. However, to ensure maximum benefit
for everyone, we encourage you to keep your postings as close to the subject
as possible.

Advertising/Solicitation: These communities were created as a forum for
providing peer-to-peer assistance on Microsoft products and services. We ask
that you refrain from posting advertisements or solicitations that do not
pertain directly to the intended use and purpose of the newsgroup or chat.

Confidentiality: Please keep in mind that our communities are public spaces,
so don't post anything that you don't want the world to see. Credit card
numbers, product keys, and other confidential information, including anything
covered under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), should not be posted to a
discussion group, chat, or other community.

This is a MS newsgroup regardless of how you access, and as such the rules
apply. However, it is obvious some people are too immature to understand rules
and why they exist.

The real problem, IMO, is not the rules. Anyone who would obey such rules,
would probably do so without any guidance. The problem is a lack of
consequences.
There was talk, for a while, of including the poster's IP in the header.
Somewhere in there, that idea was lost. If you could screen on the IP, or
perhaps the authentic 'Passport' if that could be required (as it is in the
"Communities' interface. ) the 'Message Rules' would work. One experience
with such rudeness would have people blind to all further occurrence. The
children here flexing their ego's in the only available public forum they
are capable of finding would soon tire of being cute with no fantasized
audience.
I think it likely their school babysits them in front of an internet
connection with this being the only 'chat' they can hit.

Really? Why, because you said so? There is only one rule on Usenet.
There are no rules. None, nada, never, no way. Live with it.

There are no need for rules here or in any newsgroup. You are the sole
determiner of what you download and read. Have a problem, then look in
the mirror as to who is to blame as to being unable to control your
own destiny.

Why is it sad? Try to become an adult and realize one purpose of this
and other newsgroups like it is for those experiencing problems to
express themselves and yes, at times let off a little steam. It is
abundantly clear to anyone after five minutes, adult language is
sometimes used for effect. We also have a few fools that make childish
comments and nothing else, like the resident idiot Frank.

It is also obviously that this newsgroup is infested with assorted
fools, again Frank is a prime example that for reasons also obvious
act up mainly to get a reaction from others.

Again, you can quickly determine how various regulars post and if you
don't want to read what they say, or "play" with them simply exercise
some self control and skip their posts if they bug you or just enjoy
the circus which is what this group is and the only good thing it is
for, amusement. If anyone seriously thinks this newsgroup ever was or
could be a resource for real help they're dreaming.

Microsoft aren't interested in moderating this type of newsgroup because they can "offer"
free support to the masses. If people didn't give their time and expertise freely to answer
questions then there would be a lot more irate punters wanting their money back.
Microsoft have got it too easy with these newsgroups.
People should demand more professional support from Microsoft.

While I am sure Microsoft would like to control it, it cannot.
(Fortunately). On their own boards they can filter the Vista gripes, but
not here.

Hi Carey and Mike,

I totally agree with what you say. The newsgroups should be an area where
people can ask for and seek advice from other users. Unfortunately, there are
some users, (and I am not going to name any names, but they will probably
know who they are),
who choose not to answer peoples queries but instead tag on to threads and
begin slanging matches between each other. It is annoying to post a question
and receive a lot of replies, only to find that out of the dozen or so
replies received only one answers your query whilst the others comprise a
slanging match between certain individuals. There are yet others who try to
flog things. This does nothing to help the original poster and can even put
some people off.

You should see what passes for "normal" conversation in other
newsgroups. Too many are way too uptight and defensive here.

Geez, it's just a newsgroup. People should lighten up and enjoy it for
what it is. Besides, you can watch Frank make an ass of himself and
not have to pay for the entertainment.
