Okay, for some reason, I got the impression that *at times* it did NOT work
over the network.

make sure of the actuall settings being used. Highlight what it shows for
the printer, copy and paste into a text file [not Word] and save for
reference.

Let me stop comments until to you respond with whether this is built in USB
2.0 or being supplied by an extra adapter card.

The issues may revolve several others, in addition to what has already been
addressed.

with the issue since we now have several issue out of the way..

Re: Having strange local network printing problem - could use somehelp/ideas

I unplugged my USB speakers. It didn't make any difference. Identical
behavior. However, right after doing so, I played a game of Solitaire
from SolSuite and noticed that it was operating very slowly. I could
see the cards kind of skip along when I released them, rather than zip
to it.

So I went to disable the spooler and couldn't. That option was grayed
out. Does this mean anything to you?

I also clicked on the Print Test Page button. The test page is now
hanging up the printer, and will not cancel/delete.

Any comments here?

Ok now, I don't have full info on your situation since the only posts I see
are the last two by MEB and this one I'm responding to. However, if the printer
is having problems and now you have a print queue that's hung and won't cancel
or pause, uninstall/reinstall the printer. It may squeak at you about a print
job still in queue, ignore it and continue with the uninstall/reinstall.

| minutes to clear the router buffers] and did you check its settings.
| This question relates to whether there MAY be issues with the router or

| software which, taken with these other questions and response will help
| isolate the potentials to a more limited diagnosis. IF the 98SE printer
| controller is also the router controller [contains the software] then
there
| could. potentially, be a related issue involved as well.

Thanks for that MEB, correct me if I misunderstood anything so I have it
right.

The OP has a printer connected to a 98SE machine as a local shared printer.
The printer is shared with remote XP machines on the network.
The printer fails on the 98SE machine it's physically connected to after a
shutdown/restart.
The printer still works on the remote machines after a shutdown/restart? This
doesn't make sense, hence the purpose of the question mark.

Right

Probably doesn't matter, but one remote is XPSP2 and one is 98SE

Fails any time, i.e. will not print from base machine at any time.

With regard to your suggestion about reinstalling the printer, I'm a
great believer in, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." If it was a
printer install problem, how would the other two machines be able to
make it print via the base machine?

I know little about my network. I'm not sure about the
layout/architecture in the base machine. All I'm aware of is {1} a NIC
and a cable to the modem and (2) the cable to the printer.

What could be going wrong in the base machine with the combining of all
three machines and the distribution to two of the machines, but not to
the third.

Only if the drivers are installed on the other two machines, if they aren't
and the shared printer isn't working on the host machine they printer should
fail on all machines.

Yet it is broke in a sense if it won't print, especially when the machine it's
connected to is the machine it doesn't print from. Again, that falls back to my
last statement of where the drivers are installed. If the drivers are installed
on all networked machines and the printer only fails on one machine, the drivers
on that machine have a great possibility of being corrupt.

possibly USB version/drivers not compatible with mobo, improper USB setting in

Since there appears to be issues with slow down in other areas of his
computer [the SOL game] perhaps there are memory issues, swap, or scanning
issues. Plus there is now a failure on the local/base machine

What Anti-Virus is on the machine? PLEASE don't say Norton/Symantec or
CA....

How about running memload, and some test tools like SpyWare/Malware
detection, and other??

Normc, what make and model of computer [or motherboard if homebuilt],
memory installed, video card, and what adapters [down a different path
perhaps] I still want to know if this is onboard USB or an adapter, how much
disk space is available, check the folder C:\WINDOWS\spool {what's in it},
when was the last time the temps were cleaned...

suggested previously... the failure to print a full test page indicates

I've been wrongly visualizing the system situation. I was thinking that
the base computer was taking care of everything required for printing.
But you guys got me thinking: I suspect that the HP driver is installed
on all three machines, and one of those drivers is not working, as
you've both suggested.

I will reinstall tomorrow, either from the CD or from a downloaded
update. I'll let you know.

It printed once after I uninstalled and reinstalled the USB driver.
Tried again and it wouldn't print.

I have tried it from the XPSP2 laptop and it printed as usual. I also
tried it before reinstalling the driver on the desktop, and it wouldn't
print. As soon as I reinstalled, the desktop machine printed once and
the laptop has printed whenever called upon by the laptop

Any ideas as to what can be screwing up the driver on the desktop?

On the 98SE machine:
Reboot.
Once back at the desktop press ctrl+alt+del.
If hpzstatx and/or hpzsta9 are listed in the Close Program window, End Task on
them.
Close out of Close Program.
Click Start > Find > Folders/Files.
In the box:
Named: type in hpzsta*.exe
Look in: select C:\
Click "Find Now".
If hpzstatx.exe and/or hpzsta9.exe are found, right click each one and rename
the extension to .old.
Close out of find and reboot.
Try to print to see if the issue is resolved.

If neither file is/was present on the machine:
Uninstall/reinstall the printer.
DO NOT SHARE the printer again yet.
Try to print to see if the issue is resolved.
Try to print a second time to see if the issue is resolved.
Reboot and try another print job or two to see if the issue is resolved.

Post back with the results. If the results were a failure at any time, please
post as much information as possible as to when it failed, if any print queues
are stalled, etc.
