Problems activating monitor

Alan

I have a monitor that used to be connected to a Windows 98
computer but recently has been used with a Windows Vista PC. I wanted
to use it on the Win98 computer. However, everytime I boot, the
monitor (an old Dell model m780) just sits there. The light beside
its power button just slowly blinks, and the monitor never displays
anything. When I switch it back to the Vista machine, it works fine.

I tried powering everything down completely and removing power
from everything for a few minutes, the reconnecting and booting. No
change. Same results when I power up the monitor and computer in
different sequences.

Any ideas? Thanks, Alan

Try booting using a floppy boot disk. Do you see anything then?

I`ll try that.

I did try lowering the Refresh Rate (to 60Hz), the resolution (to
800x600) and the colors (to 16 bits) on the Vista machine, then
shutting down. No change.

Thanks, Alan

Never mind, that was a total brainfart on my part. Best guess, you've
loosened the video card on the 98 machine. Try reseating it. Next thing to
try is a different video card.

I would think that a loose video card would give rise to a POST
failure. IIRC that would result in 8 beeps. Then again, if the
motherboard has onboard graphics as well as a plug-in video card, then
a loose card may result in the onboard graphics taking over, ie no
beeps.

You're assuming there is a PC speaker and that it functions, etc., <g>. As
for the onboard vs. card situation, that's something I should have asked
about.

What were you expecting to happen?
Setting your video resolution on one machine could not have any effect on an
other machine.
Since you know the monitor is working...(it works on the Vista machine)
the problem is not with the monitor...the problem is with the Win98 machine
itself.

Maybe just a bad connection???

That isn't necessarily true... many newer devices have *in device* prom,
eeprom, fprom or other which can be affected by the OS to which it is

How is it affected by the OS? Through what means of communication? Which
cable? Would this not just be a way to "remotely" set things on the monitor
that you would otherwise set by hand using dials and buttons on the monitor?
On such a monitor, wouldn't there have to be a manual reset button?

Just questions that come to mind, if you have the time.

This monitor is EPA ENERGY STAR®-compliant and NUTEK-compliant when used
with a computer equipped with VESA DPMS functionality. This system operates
with a VESA DPMS-compliant video card installed in your computer. You use a
software utility installed on your computer to set up this feature.

VISTA [in particular] and sometimes XP are directly controlling through DDC

devices.
VISTA appears to do much more of this on its own without requiring the
additional software as suggested above.

Franc, myself, and others discussed DDC a few weeks ago. As the standards
are constantly being revised, it would be best to review the standards from
both the time period for the VISTA computer and the monitor if a technical
review is what is desired. also, the monitors actual electrical schematic

I would check the pins and connectors on the 98 box to ensure full contact.
One might try disabling VESA-DPMS on the VISTA machine [if possible] or
Power States. OR waiting several hours without power [electrical and via
connections] to the monitor to see if the monitor clears. My Epson clears
after about 4 or 5 hours YMMV.
As a *never recommended* option, pull the monitor connection from the VISTA
box while running and see if it leaves it in the proper state for 98 use,
OR.disconnecting just before the final shut off of VISTA.

Best option, buy another monitor and stop changing them around.

Well that was a good observation!

But still, even if Vista had set the monitor to the sleep state...
the re-introduction of the H-sync and V-sync signal should have reset the
monitor...

If not, the monitor may have a re-set button
or option

Reset button? Where the heck and on what CRT monitor do you find a reset
button? Degauz maybe... if it has one it couldn't hurt to press it.

Ah no, not necessarily, part of the various specification compliances is
retained state [or at least it was when I read some information, of course
that may have just been proposed]..... any OPTION would be via software with
the monitor running VISUALLY {unless one has video reset software}, and
H-sync and V-sync WOULD likely work, but perhaps only FROM a fully
compatible VESA DPMS compliant computer or video card as its apparently
stuck in that mode [leaving VISTA activities out of the picture for this
portion of the discussion] OR it has issues with some internal part/chip OR
..... well there's a lot of ORs and a few ANDs.... and a couple wild guesses

If the poster is still around, we COULD find out if the compliance on the
98 box is compatible [video manufacturer/model/chipset], and several other
issues, like motherboard, BIOS support [and settings if remembered], last
time used, and other...
