I should have mentioned that the 98SE computer sprawled on the floor
has a 28.8K modem.
They do connect 28.8 -> 56, but not the other way.
So I can't try dialing W98SE to Win98FE - never establishes handshake.

Just changed out the 28.8k for a 33.6k.
And now calling the sprawled out Win98_SE_ from the WinXP Dell is just
like calling my main Win98 desktop computer.
Dies asking for Username, Password and Domain, with error 691 as
before.

A Google search for "error 691" +server got me a few most interesting
hits - why so lazy with the error number before this? The only tools
we really got have to come from you, so be verbose about it sooner.

permit only MS-CHAP v2 authentication via settings in:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826157

use HyperTerminal instead
http://modemsite.com/56k/duns691.asp

and 15,800 more or less other hits if those two fixes didn't get you
going right away.

As to the files issue, consult RNA.INF file for creating a delete file
list under [RNASERV] and [RNA] section's CopyFiles lines. For
example, under [RNASERV] section you can see that the section
MS_RNASERV_SYS_CopyFiles is pointed to and it only has one file
listed:
rnaserv.dll

which should be added to the list of files to be deleted or at least
double checked for their installed version against what versions are
available from your cab files. Once you have the file list made you
could delete them manually and then uninstall Dial-up Server and the
like from Add/Remove Programs|Windows Setup tab, Communications area.
Reboot and then reinstall all those items which should get you all new
files to start over with. Include VPN, HyperTerminal, and DUN while
you are at it.

However if you have installed higher versioned files from say the 1.4
DUN update that I pointed you to then those files may NOT be
overwritten by the "uninstall to re-install" file renewal technique.
There is a good chance that the 1.4 DUN files will just sit there and
NOT be renewed at all, so you should go by the list made earlier and
manually double check that the version you got is the version you want
for all files on the list. It might be easier to just flatten the
machine and start over as Gary puts it.

Finally, from the Network applet in your Control Panel, remove all
items and only add back in your chosen Primary Network Login choice.
Reboot. Then add back only the minimum devices required for your
system. I don't why this works - but it does many times when nothing
else seems to be working.

The interesting thing is the poster mentioned Windows 98 Gold originally but
also stated that the OP was working on a Windows 98 Second Edition machine.
It sounds like the OP has his hands full. I know I always get confused if I
am working on more than one project at once due to my learning disability.

It's tough for anyone to keep the various versions of some files sorted
properly. I can't blame anyone for that except MS itself. However, they
did write an installer that does seem to pick the right version among
many to install on a per OS basis. I guess that's good enough. Looks
like I've got the right version of VIP.386, anyhow.

That is nice to know. Fortunately, no dll hell on my end with Windows 2000
drivers being used for the printer and Windows ME drivers for the ATI 9800 XT
graphics card. <grins>

If all is working well like that, you did well. I would want to do it
too on the day I couldn't find a fit & proper Win98 driver for
something. Very good-- but stay away from anything XP/Vista!

I understand that the radiation of XP and Vista driver(s) could indeed cause
explosions of *.dll hell or worse in 98 Second Edition. Is that a correction
theory, Captain PCR. <grins>

Hey now, not quite bye but I was thinking about posting my versions too if
you are interested PCR. Also, I have now noticed that I do indeed get an
error when I go into dos mode but I think I will start a new thread about
that to get the experts here to fix that issue. Thanks again, PCR. You
truly are an awesome individual.

I don't want to know about XP/Vista versions! On the DOS problem, I'll
look for the thread when I get a chance, if it hasn't been solved by now
(& I hope it was). I continue to be busy with a leaky roof, pulling
weeds & a bad HDTV antenna. Only the weeds have been mostly solved!

Let me get this straight. A choice between a fixing a bad HDTV and pulling
weeds? Come on now PCR. After all, there are certain priorities, aren't
there? :)

So, PCR, are you thinking weeds first being the worst and least favorite to
most people I would guess, then new HDTV antenna as a reward and finally
newsgroup fun. <grin>

Ya know, since the weather was probably nice enough to pull the weeds, he
probably should have gone up on the roof first (make hay while the sun
shines), fixed the leak and also the HDTV antennae, then went down and
pulled the weeds. It would be hard to watch the HDTV while the roof is
leaking and/or the spouse is 'bitch'n' about it.

The weeds got to be higher than me! It was time for them to go! They are
fairly well gone now after 3/so weeks of daily pulling-- & gloves & Off!
kept the damage to me at a minimum this time around! The leaky roof took
two tries now. The next rain will prove whether a 3rd is necessary! I
can't seem to get HDTV channel 2.1 on my Vizio VW37L HDTV using a
Philips Mant510 indoor antenna anymore-- & I've retuned about 100 times
now! Other HDTV seem to come go-- but mostly go too! However, it isn't
yet a crisis because I get the Olympics fine on 4.1. First try will be
to replace the antenna.

I started with the weeds before hearing a complaint about the leak.
Oddly, the water got to the middle floor first, then the top & never
made it down to me on the bottom that I could see. It won't be long
before I have to think of plaster & paint.

PCR, I am burying this security issue within this thread on purpose. The
problem is Undetermined String Constants within Microsoft/NBC news articles.
The problem seems to be specifically targeting the security articles and
technology articles within msnbc. Do you have any information on this and
could you investigate. It shows up when you have all errors to be registered
by Internet Explorer. Calls to Microsoft just end up being that it is an msn
issue and then I just get voice stuff from msn. Emails to Microsoft on the
issue go unanswered as compared to my other answered email security and
safety issues. I do not have time to be on all day with msn and Microsoft
especially since Microsoft says it is an msn issue and msn is Microsoft and
NBC and I am sure NBC does not have the smarts to figure it out. Do you have
any info. on this and how to proceed. Thanks in advance and I am glad it is
staying dry for you.

Just going by this...
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-95-98-me/3867-internet-explorer-6-error.html
Internet Explorer 6 error

.... it seems to be a scripting error. It's something a site has done
wrong-- a logical or syntax error in a script the site uses or wrote. I
see no big reason to suspect foul play. Do you know definitively
otherwise? Personally, I have checked both...

(a) Disable script debugging, &
(b) Display a notification about every script error

.... in Internet Options, Browser section. That is why I probably haven't
ever seen the error, as i think you already said.

The full Google search...
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Undetermined+String+Constants&btnG=Google+Search
....does come up with 25,000 mentionings.

Here is an interesting one...
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/archive/index.php?t-116911.html
Undetermined string constant Error in 98se

It suggests the error also will go away by allowing certain multmedia
options in Internet Options. All of the options in my own Multimedia
section are checked except the first. That could be another reason I
don't get the error.
