win 98 stalling at startup due to explorer illegal operation

P

partymarty4870

This has me stumped, I have not used WIN98 for years but am setting up
an old computer.

Whilst installing an ADSL modem (working fine on my laptop) it crashed
win98 during the install (surprise,surprise).

Upon restarting WIN98 after Windows welcome screen it stalls for a
while at the Blue screen of death then an error message appears

"Explorer

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down........(you know the rest)

Details
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER>EXE at
015f:0040lf3l

Now the problem is this. It is a borrowed computer so I can not simply
do a fresh install on windows.

I have extracted and replaced explorer.exe from a old win98se disc I
had. this has not fixed the problem.

I have gone to every registry refresh point via scanreg. This did not
fix the problem.

I have run scanreg/fix. this didn't fix the problem.

I have spent six hours searching for solutions on the net

I have approx 48hrs to fix this or I will have to buy another PC, which
i do not want to do for the 3 weeks it will be needed.

Any help appreciated

Reboot to DOS and in C:\Windows do
SCANREG /RESTORE
which will present a menu of (probably 5) earlier bootup dates.
You can try any or all of these in case it boots Win98 OK.

Other likely hints.
1. Run DOS SCANDISK or
1b. Boot Windows in Safe Mode and run Windows Scan Disk.
2. Boot DOS and
FDISK /MBR
to rewrite the boot sector.
3. REName to something else AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
which Win98 does not require to start up.
4. Get an instal floppy correct for your version of Win98 (free from
www.bootdisk.com) and keep it handy. You can run DOS utilities
from this flloppy and copy files when needed (e.g. a common
startup error in flaky systems is CANNOT FIND HIMEM.SYS so
you can copy a known good file to C:\Windows in case it helps.)

The system is likely crashing when attempting to discover the network
AND/OR due to failed network software installation. Make sure there are no
previously linked share folders, mapped network drives, etc, which might
have been part of an old network on the 98 computer. Also check to ensure
that there is not some "Always dial a connection" left from any previous
network.

For initial diagnostics use msinfo32, and use winipcfg or ipconfig to
obtain the initial networking addresses/setup, and check Control Panel >
Network for any old settings. And check IE settings for connection, proxy,
etc..

You likely setup the ADSL modem in XP or Vista or will need to.

IF PREVIOUSLY SETUP, try to obtain the addressing for the modem/router from
the old/XP/VISTA system to which it was connected and transfer that
addressing to the 98 box settings in Networking. That's possibly TCP/IP,
DNS, Gateway, WINS, or other required settings.
Also, any firewall MUST be setup to allow this network traffic, and that
any previous networking settings on the 98 box are COMPLETELY removed prior
to the new setup, or it will be looking for that old network.. Make sure
that the new 98 network has been configured, if necessary, in any Anti-Virus
and other like software.

IF possible, with the ADSL still connected to the original setup computer,
look at the entire setup via its [modem/router] interface software for IP
and subnet, etc., as these were/are setup by the ISP/DSL provider. These
TCP/IP settings [IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.] in 98 MUST match what are required by
your provider and its modem/router, and your 98 computer and its software
MUST be aware of that ISP network setup/requirements OR must be set to
receive dynamic allocation, and set to any possible required network group
and/or identification..

IF the ADSL was NOT previously setup and has no 98 software support, then
you will likely need use an XP or VISTA box to set it up, then transfer
those settings to the 98 computer if necessary.

1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. Remove the ADSL setup software that you previously installed.
3. Remove everything in the Control Panel>Network applet
3. Reboot

Does that get you back into Windows?

You do not set up an ADSL modem for each computer. Is this *only* a modem
(one phone cord, one LAN cable, one power cord, that's all) or is it also a
router. What make/model modem?

What version of Windows 98? Original flavor or Second Edition?

I think Don's suggestion of simply restoring the prior registry backup would
be simpler though, right?

OR you could do this list below, and then restore the prior registry backup,
to have an even cleaner system, I expect.

Except, having tried all the Registry backups, I suspect that all the OP is
left with is the backup that got made AFTER things hit the fan. When you
restore a Registry using Scanreg /Restore, it wipes out the oldest backup to
make room for the backup it does before restoring a backup. Do that five
times and all you have left are five copies of the original Registry that
existed before any attempts to restore got started.

My other main point was to get rid of the entire Network schmear,
specifically so that any mistaken configuration that might be causing the
BSOD will, with any luck, gets nullified.

That may be true. He may not even have any, but if it just happened, he
likely might.

Yup.

Which is why I sometimes save (copy) the RB backups to another folder - for
precisely that reason. :)

Thought about it again, and it's unlikely that a backup was made AFTER the
screw-up. So, the OP simply has various backups, but who knows which is
which, now. In any case, the first thing I read from the OP is that she'd
tried all the Registry backups with no luck.

thanks guys/girls

I cannot get into windows, even in safe mode. So unfortunately any
solution has to be in DOS.

I think it is FE Windows 98. I had been on it for 20 mins when this
drama started. The Modem is a Speedstream 4200, just a modem. I was
installing Modem Drivers, which state on disc that can run on 98.

I haven't had to do anything in Dos for about 6 years,or touched 98,
this is so frustrating!!

Your IP address suggests you are with Optusnet. When I was an Optus
customer several years ago I didn't need to install any Optus setup
software. The only time you need their software is if you are
connecting via the USB port of your modem.

Manual setup procedures for various modems are available at the
following URLs:

Windows Setup for non-Optus supplied modems:
http://www.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl/connected/windows/modemme

Windows Setup for Optus supplied modems:
http://www.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl/connected/windows/optus_modems

BTW, my Optus supplied D-Link DSL-302G modem/router was delivered with
NAT disabled. You may want to check yours.

The Speedstream 4200 is a router. It can use an ethernet or USB connection.
Which way were you attempting to connect?

The modem doesn't need drivers, unless you are connecting via USB. I
suggest you use Ethernet instead.

If you eventually get into Windows, then this is the manual Windows
setup procedure:

Just to make sure, you said you'd been on for 20 minutes. You mean the
machine had been running for 20 minutes? And then, what, you installed the
software that sets up the machine to connect to the router and it crashed in
the middle of the install. Won't even start in Safe Mode but will start in
Command Prompt Only. Registry restorations don't help...

What happens? When you boot to either Normal or Safe modes from the Startup
Menu, exactly what happens? Nothing?

FWIW, I use the following code in a .bat file to check for autorun
components in my system. All lines begin with a space. Any lines not
beginning with a space have wrapped.

===========================================================================
echo Analysing registry and win.ini for autorun components ...
echo.
regedit /e %temp%.\{1}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
type %temp%.\{1} | find /v "REGEDIT4" > %temp%.\{2}
regedit /e %temp%.\{1}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
type %temp%.\{1} | find /v "REGEDIT4" >> %temp%.\{2}
regedit /e %temp%.\{1}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
type %temp%.\{1} | find /v "REGEDIT4" >> %temp%.\{2}
regedit /e %temp%.\{1}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
type %temp%.\{1} | find /v "REGEDIT4" >> %temp%.\{2}
echo. >> %temp%.\{2}
type %winbootdir%.\win.ini | find "load=" >> %temp%.\{2}
type %winbootdir%.\win.ini | find "run=" >> %temp%.\{2}
more < %temp%.\{2}
===========================================================================

You could probably modify the above code to look for other registry
components (eg Explorer shell extensions ???).

The following might get you booting back to Windows. If so, then do as
the others said to get your modem un/re-installed.

Explorer & IE are basically one & the same. Therefore, may as well try
this write-up, originally from a Gateway WEB site, which is a temporary
reversion to an earlier version of IE...

ONE THING: Do nothing more than stated here using Winfile, because, if
you move a file with it, you will lose that file's LFN (Long File Name)
in the destination.

(1) Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, & click Shut Down.

(2) After the computer has been shut down, turn on the computer. Hold
CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu, or begin pressing the F8 key in
one-second intervals. If you complete this step successfully, the
Microsoft Windows Startup Menu is displayed. If no menu is displayed and
Windows starts up normally, repeat this step.

(3) At the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu, use the ARROW keys to select
"Command Prompt Only", and then press the ENTER key.

(4) At the command prompt, type:
EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini
Press ENTER.

(5) In the C:\Windows\SYSTEM.INI file, locate the line of text under the
[boot] section that lists "Shell=Explorer.exe". This is typically the
third line in the file.

(6) Edit the "Shell=Explorer.exe" line by deleting the "Explorer.exe"
text and replacing it with "Winfile.exe". The line should list the
following:
Shell=Winfile.exe

(7) To save the changes...
(a) Press the ALT+F+X keys separately.
A "Save File" requestor appears.
(b) Press ENTER to save the changes and return to the command prompt.
(TAB navigates the buttons of the requestor.)

(8) At the command prompt, restart the computer by pressing the
CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys. Once Windows has restarted, it starts into the
Windows File Manager (Winfile.exe).

(9) In the File Manager window, double-click "progra~1" in the left
hand window to open the Program Files folder.

(10) Double-click "intern~1" in the left hand window to open the
Internet Explorer folder.

(11) Double-click "setup" in the left hand window to open the Setup
folder.

(12) In the File Manager window, double-click "Setup.exe" in the right
hand window to launch Internet Explorer setup.

NOTE: If the setup folder is not available, Internet Explorer has not
been updated and a previous version of Internet Explorer cannot be
restored. You cannot use this method. Close "Winfile", shut down, & post
back, or try the URL at the very bottom of this post, which is an
over-install of IE.

(13) In the Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools Setup window, click
OK.

(14) In the Setup Message dialog box, click Yes to restore the previous
version of Internet Explorer.

(15) Internet Explorer setup removes components.

(16) In the Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools - Restart Windows
dialog box, click Restart Windows.

When the computer is restarting, hold CTRL for the Startup Menu, or
begin pressing the F8 key in one-second intervals. If you complete this

step successfully, the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu is displayed. If
no menu is displayed and Windows starts up normally, repeat this step.

(17) At the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu, use the ARROW keys to select
Command prompt only, and then press ENTER.

(18) At the command prompt, type:
EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini
Press ENTER.

(19) In the C:\Windows\SYSTEM.INI file, locate the line of text under
the [boot] section that lists "Shell=Winfile.exe". This is typically the
third line in the file.

(20) Edit the "Shell=Winfile.exe" line by deleting the "Winfile.exe"
text and replacing it with "Explorer.exe". The line should list the
following:
Shell=Explorer.exe

(21) To save the changes...
(a) Press the ALT+F+X keys separately.
A "Save File" requestor appears.
(b) Press ENTER to save the changes and return to the command prompt.
(TAB navigates the buttons of the requestor.)

(22) At the command prompt, restart the computer by pressing the
CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys

(23) Windows starts to a blue screen, but will still be
accessing the hard drive for a period of time. When
finished, Windows is on the desktop with icons, but an
older version of Internet Explorer is installed. You
should update your antivirus software, and then perform
Windows Update to install a new version of Internet
Explorer again.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249191

Internet Explorer. This is a temporary reversion to an earlier IE, IF
that option is present.

Over-Install IE in Progman. This is an over-install of IE. I have a
detailed write-up for it, if you want.

Yep. My own recent experimentation confirms that. It's spooky & sloppy!

Sorry, forgot you'd reported the error with Explorer. Unfortunately, the
when I looked up an error it was from someone with a similar problem, just
with a different application.

Your idea makes sense to get into Windows to see what's up, and a repair or
reinstall of IE might help, but I'd bet going to Add/Remove Programs and
uninstalling the app he was installing when the machine crashed might help
the most. THEN, if there are still problems, do IE Repair (avoid the
reinstall unless absolutely necessary. Can potentially cause a bit of DLL
Hell and definitely requires that a few patches be reinstalled at WU.

But, alas, the party is pretty much over for marty unless he shows up soon
and stays. For someone who was supposedly under such a deadline, he didn't
act like it here. Heck, even when whatever it is he needed the laptop for is
done, he still needs to fix that borrowed computer.

"How to run Control Panel tools by typing a command"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192806

In Winfile.exe, use File>Run to run the command(s).

Otherwise, the next step would be to see if there is an uninstaller in the
program's folder. If I got desperate, I'd even go so far as to run the
installer again to see if it offers to uninstall, or even install it again
to see if it works this time... Except, I'm betting that the software ISN'T
OK for Win98 Gold. Yes, the Optus instructions say 98, making no distinction
between 98 and 98SE. But the drivers direct from the manufacturer say
Win98SE as minimum. Well, I took that 98SE version and installed it on a 98
Gold machine, but it stalled when it couldn't find the device. The interface
was identical to that shown on Optus. Anyway, all the places I saw it
discussed in forums that might relate to a Win98FE situation suggest that it
doesn't work very well, if at all.

If a manual cleanup is required, it will be a tedious one. To know much
more, we'd have to study the contents of the actual software Marty used.
Might be the same as the one from Siemens
