Temp Files

I've always enjoyed 98SE for it's user friendly interface. I do know my way
around a computer, but it's these little irritants like file associations
changing that get to me. I'm actually seriously considering upgrading to
another OS because so many newer programs/hardware and web content thatwon't
work with 98SE.

That's OK, then. Wooly Bully doesn't have enough L's to be much trouble.
I'm just worried, if you remove a complex one in the Folder Options,
Files Types, Registered file types list... it may not be so easy to get
it back. You'd possibly have to reinstall something. The one's in there
that have "File" in their name, like "TMP File" very likely were added
by us, using "Open with...". Also, they will look like Terhune & Lee
said in the Registry... "(Filetype)_auto_file". All of the Registry
entries for it get deleted by using Folder Options to remove the entry.
Good to see you back, DaffyD®.

A long time ago, I saw instruction (may or may not have been here) on
how to make that tickbox _off_ by default, rather than on. If I'm
opening something that way, either because I want to use notepad (say)
to examine something other than a .txt file or I'm trying (e. g.
notepad) on a "new" filetype, I don't necessarily want to make the
association permanent, which is all too easy to do in the default
situation.

[Needless to say I can't remember how to do it, but someone'll be along
in a minute ... (-:]

I understand and it has been hopeless making Microsoft try and see that a new
Windows 98 Second Edition would be in the best consumer interests and not one
that removed so much stuff like Windows ME. For example, Windows ME removed
easy access to MS-DOS and broke some compatibility with older software that
ran fine on Windows 98 Second Edition. System Restore on Windows ME really
seemed to be trying to lay the groundwork for one source code and the tying
of the knot between Windows NT and Windows 9x which worked okay in Windows XP
but it is still easier to hack a fully updated Windows XP then a fully
updated and protected Windows 98 Second Edition at least when connected to a
domain through VPN. This can be seen at the website secunia.com and
researching the vulnerabilites on the two programs and also compare Firefox
and Internet Explorer. Opera does not currently seem to have any
vulnerabilities but if it gets the market share of Mozilla Firefox then I
would seriously guess that hackers would find a way into the Opera Web
Browser.
