Another nail in the W98 coffin?

'Add/remov'ed Macromedia Flash item and used Adobe site's uninstall option.
Find > Files and folders > 'adobe' and 'flash' still showed some related
items. Mostly in Applications data and assorted Temp files.
Just highlighted and deleted the obvious stuff. Left Adobe Reader alone.
Almost two days now without that error message. Fingers crossed.
Even the larger occasional 'Microsoft IE has encountered a problem......,
send or don't send report' error message seems in remission.

Pretty much begs the obvious question - Do I really need the Flash thing?
Have seen 'Flash Player not installed' in a few add spaces on some pages but
other than that I've been doing what I usually do with this machine without
any appearant problems.

Looking back over the thread -
in a comment I made about Firefox speed I'd meant to say 'hell, this thing
has a distributor and points'.
Sometimes I miss tinkering and tweaking those things.A few basic tools and a
couple of beers and all was well.

You are most welcome. It is usually fairly easy to remove software and then
do a clean install of the software in Windows 98/98 Second Edition.
Unfortunately, things can get more complicated in Windows XP with more junk
scattered throughout more folders. I like to operate under the mantra if you
don't need the program or service then just remove it and add it back on when
a web-site comes up that actually needs it and you actually want to use the
website. I had to remove Adobe Flash and Macromedia stuff as well as the
Adobe Reader because they got corrupted a while ago. If Internet Explorer 6
gets corrupted in 98 Second Edition you can always do a repair of IE 6 that
should bring it back to its original state. A lot of errors and BSOD's were
caused by third party software drivers that were written poorly for 98 Second
Edition back around 1998(1999)-2003.

Surprise, surprise.
Guess what has found it's way back onto the Start > Add/Remove list a couple
of times?
Without asking! Without clicking 'Yes' to anything!
Yep! Adobe Flash X. Deleted and uninstalled twice.
Once when I was just checking the list for something and once when I was
checking the list for IT after getting that error message again.

Could Adobe Reader 5 or MSNBC be doing it automatically if they think I need
it?
Haven't used Adobe Reader in at least a week.

Will not visit MSNBC for a while and then maybe dump Adobe Reader, too.
Maybe I can figure out how/why it keeps re-insinuating itself.

Make sure you do NOT have Enable Install on Demand (both/either) checked in

Do a HD search for Flash and ShockWave [likely in System and/or User
profile]

Keith, you may be infected with software baddies:

Follow MEB's advice below as well as I would suggest customizing Internet
Explorer settings, blocking 3rd party cookies and not allowing session
cookies by using the advanced tab in the latest version of IE for 98, please
make sure if you use JAVA that you have the latest JAVA version installed as
well as removing all prior versions, etc. Here is a list I would also
suggest for starters:

1. Install SpywareBlaster --- it stops a lot of baddies from getting onto
Windows 98
2. What antivirus and software firewall are you using -- are they infected?
3. If you have Windows 98 Scripting Host installed --- Remove it
4. Install and use another browser like Mozilla Firefox 2.x latest version
5. Are you using a hardware router and if so -- what kind of router?
6. Are you connected by a wire or wirelessly?
7. Are you using broadband or narrowband?
8. Are you reading email in plain text and blocking remote images?
9. Install Spybot Search and Destroy and do a full scan for baddies
10. Do you notice any other funny or small software in add/remove programs?
This should get you started with making your internet browsing experience
safer
