Hi Richard,

Linux's "Hosts" file is almost a spitting image of Windows
hosts file, which is were Windows probably got the idea.
UNIX having done TCP/IP networking before DOS was even a
twinkle in Uncle Bill's eye.

So far, I am the only one that I know of with a Linux
workstation -- I actually have two. Linux, although
vastly technically superior, can not compete with
Windows base of available software. Well, software
that runs on XP. (Big mistake dissing the installed base
with Vista.)

Anyway, I have the best of both worlds,
with several Vvirtual machines running Windows: XP Pro,
Vista Ultimate, Bart PE, and ReactOS (very buggy).
With a virtual machine, I can backup "every" bit of
Windows. Linux sees Windows as a large file and with
Linux you can back "everything" up. No files locks
or system files to contend with. It takes about 10
to restore a Windows virtual machine. It takes
about two hour to restore the whole partition.
(I have had to do that twice last month. It sucks.
I got 100% of everything back. Yipee! But, it still
sucks.)

As soon as I test the winhelp file out, I will
migrate it into my various Windows Virtual machines.
Then roll it out at my customer sites.

Many thanks,
-T

Actually, the etc/hosts file is the same in all operating systems as it is a construct of
the TCP/IP protocol which is independent of the OS.

Before there were DNS servers or in a situation where there are no DNS servers one would
place the name and IP address of hosts in the etc/hosts table. Then the OS would resolve
the name to the IP address so one would not have to memorize the IP address of a given
host.

Today the reason the etc/hosts table is used is not for name resolution it is used for
redirection to IP diagniostic responder which is 127.0.0.1. This redirection is used to
avoid advertisers and malicious hosts. Most notable are the MVP Hosts file (mentioned
already in this thread) and the HP Hosts file. http://hosts-file.net/
