I can't open up folders on my desktop

I can't open any folders on my desktop. I can access the files inside the folders by opening another program and then navigating to the folder, but when I try to open them from the desktop directly, the computer either freezes up or tells me the computer will be retstarted. I get the following details from the error message:

C:\Windows\Minidump\063018-42078-01.dmp

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-57906-0.sysdata.xml

C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP

Interestingly, I can open up single files like a PDF that are on my desktop, as long as it's not contained within a folder.

I have scanned the computer several times and no virus is present. This only started a few days ago.

I can right-click on the folders and get information about the number of files inside, the type and the size. I just can't double-click on the folder without the computer crashing.

I'm still running windows 8, but am afraid to try and upgrade at this point because I can still access the files and need to back them up.

Any help would be appreciated.
