Upgrade windows 8 to 8.1

I recently reset my computer to original OS, which was windows 8. Upon initial login it informed me that windows 8 was no longer supported and offered to install 8.1. Assuming I could install it later, I dismissed it. I looked up how to upgrade to 8.1 on Microsoft's site, which told me to use windows store, but store won't fully open (it gets stuck loading). I also saw update downloads on Microsoft's website for x64 along with another website that explained they must be installed in a particular order. The none of the update files will install as the give an error that the update does not apply to my system. How can I upgrade my system to 8.1?
