Windows 8 Update will not download 124 updates says it needs ????

I just bought a gateway laptop with windows 8. Getting things running, says I 124 regular updates and 2 optional. I have run clean disk & defrag, and deleted some programs that I have no use for ( spotify, nero, etc..) also to see how much memory I have left. It will not download these for some reason. Ive the troubleshooter as well....nothing. Finally it said "windows update database error 0x80070490". I am about ready to rip my hair out, please help.
