Window Live Mail keeps downloading ALL my old emails from 4 years ago up to day - Help

I am using window Live Mail 2012 on a laptop running Windows 8. Live Mail keeps downloading all my old emails that i have received since 2015 up an til today. If i go through (as i have twice now) and delete all the old emails, Live Mail just starts sending them again. At present i have Live Mail open (on line) and it states in the bottom right hand corner "receiving mail" and on the bottom left hand corner i have a 7166 (and increasing) messages. This is not right. Please can someone advise on how i can stop this. Thank you
